Overview

This unit focuses on analysing existing organisational operations and dynamic capabilities so you can identify opportunities for rapid and financially sustainable business growth. You will develop a business plan that leverages these opportunities through intrapreneurship, technology-based solutions, and domain model transformation. In creating solutions that address the complex strategic, financial, and operational tensions involved in sustainable growth, you will demonstrate your ability to think beyond immediate tasks and add meaningful value to organisational decision-making.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Synthesise a broad array of management theories, processes and contextual data, applying it to identify opportunities for business improvement. [KS 1.1, HO 2.1]

Learning Approaches

This unit uses a student-centred learning approach in which your passions and interests guide how you engage with the theoretical frameworks and tasks. The aim is to support your self-directed learning by helping you channel your curiosity, passion, and energy into applying theory to real-life opportunity exploration and evaluation.

To achieve this, the unit incorporates contemporary, entrepreneurship-specific learning methodologies that promote authentic, meaningful, and deep learning. The goal is for you to develop the confidence and capability to take self-directed entrepreneurial action. You will engage in a series of learning activities that provide a platform for you to be assessed as an individual as you develop and articulate an effective business plan that harnesses the dynamic capabilities of an organisation.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

Students will receive feedback in various forms throughout the semester which may include: 

  • Informal: worked examples, such as verbal feedback in class, personal consultation 
  • Formal: in writing, such as checklists (e.g. criteria sheets), written commentary 
  • Direct: to individual students, either in written form or in consultation 
  • Indirect: to the whole class 

Assessment

Overview

The assessment regime for this unit provides a logical workflow from opportunity identification to scoping an initial business plan, and finally to a fully developed business plan. Each task builds on the last to support student learning and provide ongoing feedback on the development of their intrapreneurial idea.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment: Opportunity Analysis

The aim of this assessment activity is to identify and argue the relevance of a viable opportunity for business growth for a case organisation. There are two parts to this assessment item. Part 1 is a 10-minute recording of an opportunity analysis presentation in which you present an analyse of a case organisation’s operations and dynamic capabilities to identify opportunities, and present your findings for potential business growth.

Part 2 is a one-page business plan for your proposed intrapreneurial initiative. The plan will outline the value proposition of the initiative, the problem you are solving, a summary of the tactical environment, financial considerations, key milestones, dynamic capabilities, and required resources. 

The aim of this task is to obtain feedback for the development of your extended business plan due at the end of semester. Your presentation and one-page business plan should, at a minimum, include details for the aims, funding model, milestones, and dynamic capabilities that enable success.

Both part 1 and 2 are due at the same time and the following statements about use of generative AI use an eligibility of 48-hour late submission period apply to both part 1 and part 2.

Assessment: Extended Business Plan

You should incorporate and expand on the feedback from your opportunity analysis and one-page business plan from Assessment 1 to create a robust and persuasive intrapreneurial business plan. Your plan should identify the contextual, strategic, financial, technological, and ethical issues that need to be considered for successful implementation. You should place particular emphasis on the milestones, risks, stakeholder needs, and dynamic capabilities that are central to the success of your proposal, and clearly articulate the social, technical, and financial value your growth solution provides to the case organisation.
