Overview
In this introductory unit, you will explore why organisations exist, how they position and organise themselves within dynamic and competitive environments, and how managers use analytical tools to make informed strategic decisions. You will learn to assess both the external environment and an organisation’s internal capabilities, and you will practice applying these insights to real and hypothetical cases. Throughout the unit, you will build a macro-level understanding of management that emphasises strategic thinking, evidence-based decision-making, and the technical systems that support organisational performance.

In this unit, you will learn how organisations create value, compete, and grow in dynamic environments. You will develop the skills to analyse an organisation’s external environment, internal capabilities, and strategic position, and you will apply these insights to real-world case studies and group-based problem-solving.
Across the semester, you will explore core strategy concepts, including how competitive advantage is achieved, how markets and industries evolve, and how organisations can leverage their resources and capabilities to pursue growth. You will also examine high-performing teams, corporate social responsibility, and effective strategic communication.

Learning Approaches
This unit examines core strategic management theories and exemplar cases to understand and explore the analysis and integration of critical assumptions and conditions to identify, diagnose, problem solve, and devise strategies. Through a combination of learning activities and applied assessments, you will learn to conduct strategic analysis, identify opportunities and challenges, generate evidence-based recommendations, and present your findings in a clear, logical, and persuasive manner.
In this unit, you will also develop foundational skills in using GenAI to support strategic analysis, competitive evaluation, and environmental scanning—core activities in contemporary management practice. Accordingly, this unit positions GenAI as an analytical and sense-making tool that assists (but does not replace) human strategic judgement.

- Informal: worked examples, such as verbal feedback in class, personal consultation

The assessment in this unit aims to support your achievement of the learning objectives for both Discipline Knowledge and Other Graduate Capabilities. Assessment has been designed in order to allow you to:

Acting as a graduate consultant, you will analyse the external and internal environment of the case organisation. To do this, you will identify the key success factors that are the major determinants of the financial and competitive success in the organisation's industry, and analyse the case organisation's resources and capabilities to identify its dynamic capabilities.
This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.

Learning Approaches
This unit examines core strategic management theories and exemplar cases to understand and explore the analysis and integration of critical assumptions and conditions to identify, diagnose, problem solve, and devise strategies. Through a combination of learning activities and applied assessments, you will learn to conduct strategic analysis, identify opportunities and challenges, generate evidence-based recommendations, and present your findings in a clear, logical, and persuasive manner.
In this unit, you will also develop foundational skills in using GenAI to support strategic analysis, competitive evaluation, and environmental scanning—core activities in contemporary management practice. Accordingly, this unit positions GenAI as an analytical and sense-making tool that assists (but does not replace) human strategic judgement.

Overview
In this introductory unit, you will explore why organisations exist, how they position and organise themselves within dynamic and competitive environments, and how managers use analytical tools to make informed strategic decisions. You will learn to assess both the external environment and an organisation’s internal capabilities, and you will practice applying these insights to real and hypothetical cases. Throughout the unit, you will build a macro-level understanding of management that emphasises strategic thinking, evidence-based decision-making, and the technical systems that support organisational performance.

In this unit, you will learn how organisations create value, compete, and grow in dynamic environments. You will develop the skills to analyse an organisation’s external environment, internal capabilities, and strategic position, and you will apply these insights to real-world case studies and group-based problem-solving.
Across the semester, you will explore core strategy concepts, including how competitive advantage is achieved, how markets and industries evolve, and how organisations can leverage their resources and capabilities to pursue growth. You will also examine high-performing teams, corporate social responsibility, and effective strategic communication.
