Overview

This unit provides you with the opportunity to gain industry-based experience through a supervised work placement. Within the workplace (a minimum of 120 hours [equivalent to 3 weeks full-time] and maximum of 240 hours [equivalent to 6 weeks full-time]) you will apply knowledge and skills developed during your course of study. Practising workplace related skills such as team work, ethical behaviour, safe workplace practices and reflective practice as well as building on your industry networks will support you in your transition to professional practice. Your placement should be relevant to your course of study and must be approved by the course co-ordinator and the unit co-ordinator before you commence. Acceptance into this unit will be based on successful completion of prerequisites, the completion of a number of workplace requirements, and the availability of placement supervisors. The learning in this unit can be extended into a second unit LQB503.

Content

Your placement will develop your discipline specific skills and you will also develop skills in the synthesis of information by writing a review of the literature in an area related to your project. Other content in this unit will be specific to your work placement. You will apply relevant workplace health and safety principles.

Learning Approaches

You will be required to undertake some work placement preparation through QUT prior to commencing your placement. Online resources will be available through Canvas to assist you in your preparation for placement. You will receive a workplace induction at the start of your placement and you will be required to complete a WIL placement proposal timetable in collaboration with your WIL supervisor. Throughout the placement you will liaise with your academic and industry/research supervisor to support your learning. You should contact the unit coordinator if any concerns arise during placement. You will have opportunities to record and reflect on your developing skills on placement by keeping a laboratory book or diary, depending on your placement type, describing your work, according to marking criteria and guidelines provided. Your placement supervisor will provide feedback on your placement performance.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

Throughout your placement you will receive ongoing formative feedback on your application of theory and practical skills in the workplace, and your overall performance in the laboratory/workplace from your supervising scientists and other colleagues.

Assessment

Overview

You are required to complete a minimum of 120 hours on placement to pass the unit.  Your final grade for this unit will be either Satisfactory (S) or Unsatisfactory (U). To obtain an overall pass you must achieve a Satisfactory result for all of your assessment tasks.

Your assessment includes a laboratory book or diary entries, a review of the literature/other documents, and supervisor evaluation. You will submit your literature/document review using Turnitin to assist with plagiarism awareness. 

If you receive an Unsatisfactory (U) result for your lab-book/diary or literature/document review, you will be given feedback by the LQB502 Unit Coordinator or LS40 Course Coordinator within (10) days of receiving your final result. You will also have the opportunity to resubmit your lab-book/diary or literature/document review.

Assessment: Lab book/Diary

Assessment Name: Lab book/Diary

This assessment item consists of a daily laboratory book or diary entries. You will complete daily entries in your laboratory book or diary describing the work you have undertaken or observed according to the guidelines provided. There must be evidence of some insight into learnings from the work undertaken. The lab book/diary will be submitted to the unit co-ordinator at the end of placement for marking.

This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.

Threshold Assessment:

You must obtain a satisfactory grade for this assessment item in order to have an overall satisfactory grade for the unit. If your initial assessment submission is unsatisfactory, you will be given feedback and one chance to fix it and re-submit the assessment.

Assessment: Literature/document Review

Assessment Name: Literature/Document Review

You will write a critical literature review (or a review of other relevant documents - ie: SOP's) regarding an area related to your placement or research project which will help you to develop a deeper understanding of your placement or project and related background literature. This should be 2500 words in length, and will include figures and reference to the literature/relevant documents (as specified by the guidelines on the Canvas site).

Assessment: Placement Performance

Supervisor assessment. You will demonstrate an understanding of health and safety, and develop skills and professional capabilities during your work placement. You will be assessed by your supervisor on the marking criteria sheet provided on the application of your discipline-specific knowledge and skills, your capacity to work independently and collaboratively and your ability to demonstrate responsible, professional and ethical behaviour.

You must obtain a satisfactory grade for this assessment item in order to have an overall satisfactory grade for the unit, i.e., your supervisor must be satisfied with your attendance and work during placement.

Academic Integrity

Requirements

You may be required to obtain a Blue card and immunisations and there may be other mandatory requirements that also will incur some cost for the student. You may be required to supply personal protective equipment, including fully enclosed shoes.

There are no specific materials required for this unit. You may be asked to refer to materials by your supervisor in the workplace, or by your Unit Coordinator. 

Risk Assessment Statement

You are required to abide by the occupational health and safety regulations of the workplace and QUT regulations. You are also required to complete appropriate occupational health and safety inductions specific to the workplace to a satisfactory level before commencement of your placement. By following these safety guidelines you are insured by Queensland University of Technology during your work placement.


You will be required to read the document 'Managing your rights, responsibilities and safety on placements' produced by the WILS team and disclose relevant health information as specified in this document. Students who are pregnant at the time of their placement also have particular disclosure requirements, as detailed in this document. Personal or medical information must be disclosed for example when there is an increased risk to the student or others, an impediment exists where adjustments to tasks will be required and/or if there are specific religious, cultural or family requirements.


All accidents, incidents and critical near-misses should be reported to the industry workplace safety supervisor, the unit co-ordinator and reports made to the Faculty of Health OH&S manager, QUT.
