Overview
This unit focuses on experimental and creative approaches to contemporary drawing. Contemporary drawing explores creative modes of engaging with materials, processes and concepts, to communicate ideas, capture experiences and respond to environments. Using a studio-based approach, you will explore, compose, analyse and interpret a range of modern and contemporary works of art. The aim of this unit is to build your technical and conceptual knowledge to increase your appreciation of drawing as a mode of expression and to extend your drawing skills for application in visual art, animation, design and educational settings.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:
- Creatively apply processes, techniques and concepts in the production of drawings
- Develop, critically reflect on and communicate experimental and conceptual processes and outcomes in relation to contemporary drawing
- Describe, analyse and communicate effectively the form, process, content and context of contemporary drawing
Content
This unit is focused on content in relation to the creative exploration of drawing media in contemporary art, such as figuration, abstraction and experimentation. These approaches are investigated through diverse drawing media and processes, linking applied exercises with individual practices and projects. This unit uses a studio-based approach that incorporates in-class activities and independent work supplemented by lectures and group critiques to consolidate your understanding of drawing theory. You will expand the possibilities of drawing practice through observational, expressive and collaborative processes. This includes a focus on drawing as communication, and how this can be applied and translated in digital and material forms, and in a range of creative, professional and public contexts.
Learning Approaches
In this unit, you will learn by engaging in the following:
- Lectures that address key themes in relation to contemporary drawing and introduce artists who employ diverse approaches to drawing media.
- Studio-based activities where you will explore conceptual and technical approaches to drawing such as figuration, abstraction and environmental practices.
- Developing and presenting an independent creative work in your chosen approach to contemporary drawing.
Feedback on Learning and Assessment
You will gain feedback in this unit by participating in regular studio based critiques with academics and peers. You will also reflect on and receive written feedback on artworks in progress in Assessment 1, which will directly relate to and inform your major creative work.
Assessment
Overview
The summative assessment for this unit includes the development of a folio of drawings, utilising a range of approaches to media and processes, and a written reflection on this process. The major creative work will explore your chosen approach to concept, medium, form and process and be presented along with a written statement. Formative assessment involves regular feedback on artworks.
This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.

Academic Integrity
Academic integrity is a commitment to undertaking academic work and assessment in a manner that is ethical, fair, honest, respectful and accountable.
The Academic Integrity Policy sets out the range of conduct that can be a failure to maintain the standards of academic integrity. This includes, cheating in exams, plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion and contract cheating. It also includes providing fraudulent or altered documentation in support of an academic concession application, for example an assignment extension or a deferred exam.
You are encouraged to make use of QUT’s learning support services, resources and tools to assure the academic integrity of your assessment. This includes the use of text matching software that may be available to assist with self-assessing your academic integrity as part of the assessment submission process.
Breaching QUT’s Academic Integrity Policy or engaging in conduct that may defeat or compromise the purpose of assessment can lead to a finding of student misconduct (Code of Conduct – Student) and result in the imposition of penalties under the Management of Student Misconduct Policy, ranging from a grade reduction to exclusion from QUT.
