Overview
This unit focuses on set and spatial design approaches to shaping worlds for live performances, film and television, installations and creative encounters. Through a mix of practical exploration and analysis of professional practice, the unit delivers skills, techniques and concepts to equip you in designing spaces within your individual creative practice.
You will learn how the foundational elements of production design are applied in professional practice and how they can enhance your own creative work. Through the lecture series, you will be exposed to a range of design styles and genres and discover key elements of set and spatial design. The workshops and the assessment items provide the opportunity to apply set and spatial design skills to a creative area of your choice.
This unit complements disciplines such as Acting, Drama, Visual Art, Music, Film, Screen & Animation, Dance, Fashion, Interaction Design, Architecture & Interior Design.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:
- Analyse set and spatial design principles used in the creative arts
- Demonstrate knowledge of core production design genres, forms, and styles
- Apply production design skills and techniques in response to a creative brief
- Effectively communicate set and spatial design ideas through written, oral and visual communication skills
Content
This unit will include:
- Exploration of set and spatial design across the creative arts
- Consideration and application of core set and spatial design skills
- Developing your vocabulary to understand and communicate set and spatial design concepts
- Developing design responses to a chosen creative text, work or brief
- Practical set and spatial design skills, including technical plan drawing and model making, using both analog and digital tools
Learning Approaches
In this unit, you will learn by engaging with a series of lectures and workshops.
Through the lecture series, you will be exposed to a wide range of design styles and genres. You will learn how the foundational elements of production design are applied in professional practice and how to use them to enhance your own creative work. In the workshops and the assessment items you will learn the steps to creating set and spatial designs, and learn core skills and analogue and digital techniques including model making and technical drawing.
Feedback on Learning and Assessment
Feedback will be both formative and summative throughout the semester. Students will receive summative feedback on their assessment from Staff via Canvas. Formative feedback will be provided during workshops, in-class discussions and presentations.
Assessment
Overview
The three assignments for this unit focus on analysing and applying set and spatial design techniques and concepts.
Assessment 1 builds up your understanding of set and spatial design by preparing a visual essay that examines the professional application of set and spatial design techniques. Assessments 2 and 3 are both focused on your own set and spatial design project, where you will create a design response to a chosen text, work or brief. Assessment 2 asks you to prepare a Design Proposal, outlining your major inspirations and design plans. Assessment 3 will be your final design in the form of a presentation.
Unit Grading Scheme
7- point scale
Assessment Tasks
Assessment: Visual Essay
Select a creative work from a provided list of examples and analyse how the work uses principles of set and spatial design to create worlds that align with, enhance, and extend the project's creative intent.
This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.
The ethical and responsible use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools is authorised in this assessment. See the relevant assessment details in Canvas for specific guidelines.
Assessment: Design Proposal
Prepare a set and spatial design proposal for a chosen text, work or brief. The proposal must convey your understanding of the core elements of the text, work or brief, explain how these elements are served by your proposed design, and be supported by visual research.
This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.
The ethical and responsible use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools is authorised in this assessment. See the relevant assessment details in Canvas for specific guidelines.
Assessment: Design Presentation
Deliver a design presentation that showcases your set and/or spatial design concept. Using relevant physical and/or digital materials, you should demonstrate how your design creates an effective world that suits the needs of your chosen creative text, work or brief.
The ethical and responsible use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools is authorised in this assessment. See the relevant assessment details in Canvas for specific guidelines.
Academic Integrity
Academic integrity is a commitment to undertaking academic work and assessment in a manner that is ethical, fair, honest, respectful and accountable.
The Academic Integrity Policy sets out the range of conduct that can be a failure to maintain the standards of academic integrity. This includes, cheating in exams, plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion and contract cheating. It also includes providing fraudulent or altered documentation in support of an academic concession application, for example an assignment extension or a deferred exam.
You are encouraged to make use of QUT’s learning support services, resources and tools to assure the academic integrity of your assessment. This includes the use of text matching software that may be available to assist with self-assessing your academic integrity as part of the assessment submission process.
Breaching QUT’s Academic Integrity Policy or engaging in conduct that may defeat or compromise the purpose of assessment can lead to a finding of student misconduct (Code of Conduct – Student) and result in the imposition of penalties under the Management of Student Misconduct Policy, ranging from a grade reduction to exclusion from QUT.
Requirements to Study
Requirements
You will be required to provide some drawing equipment and a scale ruler. You may wish to use digital drawing tools or computer-aided design programs, and more information on access to these will be provided in class.
Costs
Scale ruler and drawing supplies, approximately $15-$20
Resources
Refer to the unit’s Canvas site for links to additional readings (via QUT Readings) and learning resources.
Computer labs and studios are available on campus.
Risk Assessment Statement
All students are requested to visit and review the Health and Safety information on the HiQ web pages (CIESJ Tier 1 HSE requirement). This unit also requires a Tier 2 CIESJ Health and Safety Induction which is provided by the technician on site in the theatre, workshop or studio. Some students may be required to complete a Tier 3 CIESJ Health and Safety Induction which is a hands on induction on specific machinery. Where substantial computer-based work is required you are recommended to take regular rest breaks when engaging in prolonged computer-based work, and ensure that your workstation is set up for optimal comfort to prevent strain or injury.
