Overview

This unit consolidates your studio practice while focusing on advanced production stages and skill sets and knowledge required to deliver high-quality final outputs for film and related platforms. As part of your work in this unit the entire VFX pipeline is being explored, engaging you in production and post-production processes that bring together 3D assets and images into a short narrative based cinematic sequence of your design. This unit will bring depth and breadth to your technique and applies directly to Advanced Animation Production 2.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Professionally communicate ideas, proposals and outcomes connected to animation production clearly and coherently.
  2. Work capably and independently within an animation studio as a leader or collaborator on an animation project.
  3. Apply advanced software processes to the completion of animation production tasks using complex problem solving through iterative experimentation.
  4. Formulate and apply an independent perspective through reflection and by acting on the informed critique of others.

Content

The content of this unit focuses on developing a professional depth of understanding within the field of animation production. In general the content of this unit will cover advanced animation process, techniques and concepts and define professional standards within the industry.

Learning Approaches

The teaching and learning approaches of this unit combine theory and practice, and incorporate feedback and guidance within a workshop context. Production teaching is structured around a production environment where your work is supported by ongoing processes of reflection and critique. There may be an opportunity to work on industry-based research and/or production tasks.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

The studio environment allows for ongoing communication and feedback with relevant teaching staff and peers. Within the classes you will engage in critique sessions where you, your peers and teaching staff will discuss issues arising in the development and resolution of designs, and provide formative feedback.

Additionally feedback in this unit is provided to you in the following ways:

  • criteria sheet grading of summative pieces
  • comments on summative assessment outcomes in addition to criteria sheets via in class discussions and/or QUT Canvas
  • general comments back to the cohort via QUT Canvas and within classes.

Assessment: Animated Teaser Sequence - Development, Design and Previsualisation

Respond to a series of challenges related to animation pre-visualization and visual effects (VFX) design.

This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.

Assessment: Assessment 2: Teaser Sequence - Production and Postproduction

Produce and present a short, cinematic sequence of your design which incorporates visual effects and expands on the production and post-production challenges of Assessment 1. Principles and processes of general animation production will be applied in the context contemporary visual effects techniques for film.

This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.
