Overview
This unit is aimed at students commencing a research project, a main purpose being to shepherd them through production of their first detailed research proposal/report in the topic area of their intended research, while also serving to orient them in their research efforts. Quality control and good project management are encouraged throughout the research project as is close attention to scope and issues management. Main items of assessment pertain to each student's unique, research project. Students review literature related to their research in depth and prepare a detailed proposal outlining the research question, design and project plan. HDRs will focus on the proposal while coursework masters students will produce a light proposal, moving quickly to production of a content analysis report. There are guest speakers on information searching, research ethics and intellectual property and commercialisation.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:
- Search research databases and evaluate scholarly literature.
- Identify a research problem and formulate a well-defined research question(s).
- Plan a research project aligned to an established methodology
- Analyse data using appropriate research methodologies
- Write a well-structured and credible research report linking problem, process and outcomes.
Content
In this unit you are introduced to the research process, research quality control, research project management and research design. You will examine how to source relevant literature, critique results, manage a research project, and how to write a research proposal. Coursework Masters students will produce and present a content analysis report.
Learning Approaches
The content of the unit is delivered through lectures, guest sessions, self-study, formal individual meetings, development of research project deliverables, formal presentations.
Feedback on Learning and Assessment
Feedback is given through timely return of assignments with comments, individual/study group stream meetings, consultation and ongoing ready access to the lecturer or tutors throughout.
Assessment
Overview
Study Groups form week 4, commence week 5, and run through week 12. Each student will present once at Study Group and thereafter submit a Decision Resolution as email attachment (see separate Week 1 Document). All main written assessment is submitted through Canvas. It is mandatory that all enrolled students present during the final week of semester. ALL assessment pertains to the student's own, unique research project.
Unit Grading Scheme

Assessment Tasks
Assessment: Preliminary research report
The purpose of this assessment is to provide you with a check-in point on the progress of your research. You will submit a report, which shows your progress to date.
This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.
Assessment: Discussion Forum
Participate in class and in study groups and report on presentations at study groups; oral presentation of student's own proposal that typically will include visual materials (e.g. Powerpoint slides)
Assessment: Research Report
You are required to write a scholarly research report that integrates the research question(s), literature and method(s) and outcomes to date.
This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.
Academic Integrity
Students are expected to engage in learning and assessment at QUT with honesty, transparency and fairness. Maintaining academic integrity means upholding these principles and demonstrating valuable professional capabilities based on ethical foundations.
Failure to maintain academic integrity can take many forms. It includes cheating in examinations, plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, and submitting an assessment item completed by another person (e.g. contract cheating). It can also include providing your assessment to another entity, such as to a person or website.
You are encouraged to make use of QUT’s learning support services, resources and tools to assure the academic integrity of your assessment. This includes the use of text matching software that may be available to assist with self-assessing your academic integrity as part of the assessment submission process.
Further details of QUT’s approach to academic integrity are outlined in the Academic integrity policy and the Student Code of Conduct. Breaching QUT’s Academic integrity policy is regarded as student misconduct and can lead to the imposition of penalties ranging from a grade reduction to exclusion from QUT.
