Overview

This unit is a research project and introduces the necessary skills in research. It enables students of Honors degree to start planning and researching a well-defined project with specific outcomes within a precisely defined project plan. In this unit, the research project is developed further, following the work done in IFN403-1. The research project will be developed further and completed in IFN403-3 and IFN403-4.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate independent collection, analysis and synthesis of data and information in a research project in a discipline related context.
  2. Employ logical and sound judgement for informed decision-making.
  3. Apply independent research to identify evidence-based solutions for complex problems.
  4. Communicate and justify your research to diverse audiences.
  5. Reflect on your research and project management practices relevant to academic and professional practice.

Content

The content of this unit will include aspects of research design, research methodology, project management, discipline knowledge, data analysis, report writing, and presentation.

The project is an integrated research exercise wherein you will execute independent research and document it by means of a written thesis in a style commensurate with the field. A conference will take place towards the end of the unit and you will be provided with the opportunity to either present at the conference or submit a poster presentation of your research.

Specific content of the unit may include, according to the project topic:
  • Research philosophy and practicalities.
  • Data collection and analysis specific to the research field.
  • Synthesis of your research with the discipline literature.
  • Problem solving.
  • Writing, editing and presenting your research.
  • Ethics, health and safety and professional integrity.

Learning Approaches

Research Project is a unit in which students are required to continue and complete independent research in consultation with a supervisor. Students are expected to maintain regular contact with their supervisor.

Ongoing use of study groups for support and reciprocal learning is encouraged. The collaborative working models introduced in the Foundations of Research unit will be utilised through the study groups and will be included in the reflective journal. You will keep your reflective journals up to date as you continue to monitor and manage the research and project implementation process.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

Feedback on formative and summative assessment items will be provided through meetings with teaching staff and peer review in study groups.

Assessment

Overview

Teaching staff will discuss with you the most appropriate strategies and milestones to be achieved throughout the semester based on your research topic. Drafts of sections of your final output will be formatively assessed throughout the semester, the feedback, and your responses to it, will be included in your reflective journal.

The timing, weighting and type of assessment may change, depending on the advanced topic taught in any given semester. It is expected that the assessment will be both formative and summative in nature as your project will be finalised and assessed in this semester following on from your learning in the previous semester unit (IFN403-1).

Academic Integrity

Students are expected to engage in learning and assessment at QUT with honesty, transparency and fairness. Maintaining academic integrity means upholding these principles and demonstrating valuable professional capabilities based on ethical foundations.

Failure to maintain academic integrity can take many forms. It includes cheating in examinations, plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, and submitting an assessment item completed by another person (e.g. contract cheating). It can also include providing your assessment to another entity, such as to a person or website.

You are encouraged to make use of QUT’s learning support services, resources and tools to assure the academic integrity of your assessment. This includes the use of text matching software that may be available to assist with self-assessing your academic integrity as part of the assessment submission process.

Further details of QUT’s approach to academic integrity are outlined in the Academic integrity policy and the Student Code of Conduct. Breaching QUT’s Academic integrity policy is regarded as student misconduct and can lead to the imposition of penalties ranging from a grade reduction to exclusion from QUT.
