Overview

Advances in science require a sound understanding of previously published investigations, and an ability to independently critically analyse scientific manuscripts and their significance to the area of investigation.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Exercise critical thinking, judgment and interpretation of scientific publications.
  2. Demonstrate skills in critical analysis of methods, data, project design and conduct related to scientific research.
  3. Communicate rigorous feedback in appropriate written research reports.

Content

Topics covered will include examination and critical analysis of a scientific manuscript and skills for writing scientific research reports, reviews and recommendations to the editor.

Learning Approaches

The unit is integrated with HLH105 Research Strategies 1 where lecture/discussion sessions on sound scientific writing, critical analysis of scientific papers and grant writing/funding and industry research will be presented by experienced scientists who have been successful in obtaining national competitive grants, industry funding, philanthropic funding and reviewing scientific publications. Online and blended learning is provided through resources and examples on Canvas that are discussed in a workshop and lecture specific to this manuscript critique. The unit also demands that you develop information retrieval and communication skills because these are seen as essential to life-long learning. You will be required to submit a written critical analysis of a research paper in an area outside your project.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

You will be provided with extensive formative assessment during classroom activities on scientific writing and on the analysis and assessment of scientific publications, integrated with the companion unit HLH105 Research Skills and Strategies 1. Additionally, your project supervisor(s) will review your progress through weekly/fortnightly meetings. In preparation for writing your manuscript critique, you will read a published manuscript and discuss its positive and negative aspects as a discussion group, under the guidance of a senior researcher. Following summative assessments, you will be provided with written feedback from your assessors, and you will be encouraged to discuss these comments with your project supervisor(s).

Assessment

Overview

You will be graded in this unit on the basis of a written critique of a manuscript on a topic within your field of research but not specific to your Honours project.

Academic Integrity

Students are expected to engage in learning and assessment at QUT with honesty, transparency and fairness. Maintaining academic integrity means upholding these principles and demonstrating valuable professional capabilities based on ethical foundations.

Failure to maintain academic integrity can take many forms. It includes cheating in examinations, plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, and submitting an assessment item completed by another person (e.g. contract cheating). It can also include providing your assessment to another entity, such as to a person or website.

You are encouraged to make use of QUT’s learning support services, resources and tools to assure the academic integrity of your assessment. This includes the use of text matching software that may be available to assist with self-assessing your academic integrity as part of the assessment submission process.

Further details of QUT’s approach to academic integrity are outlined in the Academic integrity policy and the Student Code of Conduct. Breaching QUT’s Academic integrity policy is regarded as student misconduct and can lead to the imposition of penalties ranging from a grade reduction to exclusion from QUT.

Resources

There are no textbooks for this unit. Copies of requirements for the unit and the assessment criteria are provided in the Honours Booklet available from the Unit Coordinator and on Canvas.
