It enables you to extend your knowledge and understanding of a topic area that is not otherwise available as a formal unit of study within the course, and your skills in knowledge development and knowledge management. This is a self-directed learning opportunity and prior to enrolling in the unit you will need to organise an academic supervisor with whom you will discuss your proposed study, its learning outcomes and any issues related to its successful completion.

Content

The content for this unit will be negotiated between individual students and their academic supervisors. It will be designed to assist knowledge development in the chosen topic area and to enhance skills in knowledge development, critical thinking, knowledge management and/or writing for an academic audience.

Learning Approaches

This unit is undertaken as a self-initiated and self-directed but supervised research project. Prior to enrolling in the unit you will need to organise an academic supervisor with whom you will discuss your proposed study, its learning outcomes and any issues related to its successful completion. This will involve completing a draft 'Proposal Statement' giving the details of your proposed study. This proposal statement will need to be approved by your Course Coordinator prior to the start of the semester in which you intend undertaking the study. You will develop this proposal for submission in week 3. You will meet with your supervisor at negotiated times throughout the semester and, as part of your assessment, you will be expected to make an oral presentation. Meetings during semester will generally be on an individual student-supervisor basis, but there may also be the opportunity for group discussions of work in progress.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

You will be able to submit drafts of your work-in-progress for comment from your supervisor.

Academic Integrity

Students are expected to engage in learning and assessment at QUT with honesty, transparency and fairness. Maintaining academic integrity means upholding these principles and demonstrating valuable professional capabilities based on ethical foundations.

Failure to maintain academic integrity can take many forms. It includes cheating in examinations, plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, and submitting an assessment item completed by another person (e.g. contract cheating). It can also include providing your assessment to another entity, such as to a person or website.

You are encouraged to make use of QUT’s learning support services, resources and tools to assure the academic integrity of your assessment. This includes the use of text matching software that may be available to assist with self-assessing your academic integrity as part of the assessment submission process.

Further details of QUT’s approach to academic integrity are outlined in the Academic integrity policy and the Student Code of Conduct. Breaching QUT’s Academic integrity policy is regarded as student misconduct and can lead to the imposition of penalties ranging from a grade reduction to exclusion from QUT.
