Overview
This unit provides you with an introduction to educational research with a focus on understanding and evaluating research as a practitioner and planning research as a researcher. A key focus is on developing your understanding of how to identify high quality research, as an educational research consumer, as well as building understanding of research design. The unit is designed to develop your understanding of the systematic approaches that researchers use to design studies, and gather and analyse data to generate new knowledge that is reliable and valid.
This unit plays a key role in introducing you to appropriate forms of inquiry both as a consumer of education research, and for those seeking to undertake research degrees. It provides you with an overview of the philosophies, frameworks, methodologies and protocols for planning, implementing, and evaluating research within education contexts.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:
- Discuss and integrate research methods, principles and scholarly literature and apply it to educational contexts and scenarios.
- Source and evaluate scholarly and professional literature related to professional educational practice and research.
- Plan for and reflect on ethical research and inquiry related to educational issues, practices and emerging technologies.
- Create and present multi-modal resources to communicate research methods to specialist and non-specialist audiences in professional and scholarly contexts.
Content
This unit covers the following:
- Educational research design
- Research quality and core issues: What is quality research? How can I find and access quality research in contemporary times?
- What are the major differences between different worldviews and kinds of education research (qualitative, quantitative, mixed-methods)
- Research Protocols (research ethics, integrity, and GenAI)
- Evaluating the quality and trustworthiness of research, including research sourced through GenAI
- Introduction to methods commonly used in education research, and principles of ethical research
Learning Approaches
In this unit you will learn through engaging in the following:
- pre-recorded online videos
- tutorials (online and on-campus)
- online learning activities
- readings
- authentic assessment tasks in which you will apply scholarly knowledge to real world scenarios and in your own context.
This unit employs interactive and discussion-based learning and critical reflection on the intersection of theory and experience.
Feedback on Learning and Assessment
Feedback in this unit is provided to you in the following ways:
- a range of formative exercises discussed and undertaken throughout the unit
- feedback from peers as you investigate and discuss issues raised throughout the unit
- comments about summative assessment work included with your grade.
Assessment
Overview
There are two assessments in this unit:
1. Evaluating Educational Research - this task draws on research principles to evaluate the quality of research in an education context and reflect on the use of GenAI in education research.
2. Digital Poster Presentation - this task connects research principles and methodologies with an educational workplace context to create a digital poster and present this in an interactive presentation.

Assessment Tasks
Assessment: Evaluating Educational Research
You will plan for and evaluate the quality of published educational research. You will begin by evaluating the research yourself and then you will use Generative AI to conduct an evaluation of the same research. Following this, you will write a reflection about the process and effectiveness of using Generative AI to evaluate research. You will present your key learnings about the ethical use of Generative AI for this purpose.
This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.
Assessment: Multimedia Presentation
You will create a multimedia presentation that frames a research problem statement relevant to an educational work context, proposes a research method, and evaluates the relevance of the chosen approach in relation to the problem and context. You will identify and discuss one research methodology, its strengths and weaknesses before discussing how/why this method could be useful in your professional context. You must explain what some of the key ethical considerations would be, if you were to conduct research using this approach. You will present your digital poster at a scheduled time and respond to questions.
Academic Integrity
Academic integrity is a commitment to undertaking academic work and assessment in a manner that is ethical, fair, honest, respectful and accountable.
The Academic Integrity Policy sets out the range of conduct that can be a failure to maintain the standards of academic integrity. This includes, cheating in exams, plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion and contract cheating. It also includes providing fraudulent or altered documentation in support of an academic concession application, for example an assignment extension or a deferred exam.
You are encouraged to make use of QUT’s learning support services, resources and tools to assure the academic integrity of your assessment. This includes the use of text matching software that may be available to assist with self-assessing your academic integrity as part of the assessment submission process.
Breaching QUT’s Academic Integrity Policy or engaging in conduct that may defeat or compromise the purpose of assessment can lead to a finding of student misconduct (Code of Conduct – Student) and result in the imposition of penalties under the Management of Student Misconduct Policy, ranging from a grade reduction to exclusion from QUT.
