Overview
As well as developing a sound knowledge base, studying school guidance and counselling requires the development of skills to apply this knowledge in practical settings in schools. This unit provides you with the opportunity to apply your learnings during one or more supervised practicums and to reflect on your learnings during individual and group supervision sessions and a written task.
This is a designated unit which is essential to your course progression. Designated units include professional experience units, units requiring the development of particular skills, and units requiring demonstration of certain personal qualities. If you fail to achieve a satisfactory level of performance in a designated unit, you may be excluded from enrolment or will be put on academic probation. If you fail a designated unit twice within your course, you may be excluded. Supplementary assessment is not available on designated units.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:
- Reflect on practice and learning experiences to improve professional knowledge and practice in school counselling.
- Communicate about school counselling with colleagues and other professionals using professional language.
- Propose solutions to authentic school counselling problems.
Content
This unit will cover:
- working as a school counsellor in different education systems
- professional associations for school counsellors
- applying for school counsellor positions
- supervision
Learning Approaches
In this unit you will learn by engaging in the following:
- sessions (synchronous or asynchronous) that may include learning, supervision, reflection and advice on applying for positions
- guest lectures and/or panels with school counsellors and other industry partners
- practicum (optional)
This unit provides two options for completion. Option one is highly recommended.
Option one: You will participate in a 50 hour practicum in one or more approved school settings during the semester you undertake this unit. You will complete the practicum within a primary, secondary or special education school setting under the supervision of a practising Guidance Officer/Counsellor. You are responsible for organising your availability to participate in this 50 hour practicum.
Please note that as you are “in training” – you will not be permitted to counsel students in a school setting during your practicum. It is important that you abide with the expectations of your supervising school and be as helpful as you can and learn as much as you can during your practicum.
Option two: You will complete an alternative assessment task rather than participating in a practicum. This option is provided for students whose personal or professional circumstances prevent them from participating in a 50 hour practicum during the semester. This alternate learning experience and assessment task leads to the same learning outcomes.
Regardless of which option is chosen, you will participate in
1. one hour of individual supervision (with the unit co-ordinator or delegate) that will follow a similar process to the way that Guidance Officers/Counsellors participate in clinical supervision.
2. to demonstrate your key learnings across EU75 you will participate in an oral discussion with the unit co-ordinator (or delegate) and peer/s in a small group to respond to questions related to the CLOs. This task will build your skills to translate your learnings from EU75 to scenarios that are relevant to the role of the Guidance Officer/Counsellor.
Feedback on Learning and Assessment
Formative feedback is provided through supervision with your QUT Unit Coordinator (or delegate), unit teachers and your practicum supervisor/s.
