Overview

This unit will enable you to draw upon your professional knowledge and experience in making child observations and in planning, implementing and evaluating learning experiences for children and to critically reflect upon your experiences in the early childhood setting, making links to current literature in the field. The professional experience component of this course provides opportunities for the demonstration of competence in working with young children in a planned environment.

This is a designated unit which is essential to your course progression. Designated units include professional experience units, units requiring the development of particular skills, and units requiring demonstration of certain personal qualities. If you fail to achieve a satisfactory level of performance in a designated unit, you may be excluded from enrolment or will be put on academic probation. If you fail a designated unit twice within your course, you may be excluded. Supplementary assessment is not available on designated units.

Content

You will complete a 30 day (6 weeks) professional experience with children in an early childhood setting.  You are expected to become familiar with the operation of the program prior to the professional experience. Given your existing professional status and experience, a professional standard of communication, both written and interpersonal, is expected. The unit offers a series of modules related to facets of early childhood education including contemporary issues around leadership, physical and health education for young children (including their well-being and safety), and supporting children and families from diverse background, including different learning styles, and pedagogies that include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives.

Learning Approaches

This professional experience unit is undertaken in an early childhood setting for 30 days (6 weeks). Under your host teacher's supervision you will work progressively towards assuming responsibility for all aspects of the teaching role, including working with individual, small and large groups of children, and assuming responsibility for the management and administration of the learning environment. As part of the professional experience, you will also be expected to implement and critically reflect upon a variety of positive behaviour strategies that help support young learners to productively engage in the curriculum. These processes will also involve communicating, interacting and forming partnerships with families, community and staff. The unit also provides opportunities to reflect on your experiences (in order to develop one's own professional identity), making links with current literature related to the early childhood education field.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

Students can expect formative feedback as part of engaging with the staff and peers in online discussions. Summative feedback will be provided in the form of assessment rubrics and comments on assignments.

Assessment

Overview

Assessment in this unit is both formative and summative. Formative assessment is provided through feedback in email discussions and phone calls, written comments on assignment work, and feedback from staff. To gain a passing grade for this unit overall, both of the assessment items must be satisfactorily completed. Students who do not successfully complete all assessment items will be required to repeat the entire unit including the 30 days professional experience.

Academic Integrity

Students are expected to engage in learning and assessment at QUT with honesty, transparency and fairness. Maintaining academic integrity means upholding these principles and demonstrating valuable professional capabilities based on ethical foundations.

Failure to maintain academic integrity can take many forms. It includes cheating in examinations, plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, and submitting an assessment item completed by another person (e.g. contract cheating). It can also include providing your assessment to another entity, such as to a person or website.

You are encouraged to make use of QUT’s learning support services, resources and tools to assure the academic integrity of your assessment. This includes the use of text matching software that may be available to assist with self-assessing your academic integrity as part of the assessment submission process.

Further details of QUT’s approach to academic integrity are outlined in the Academic integrity policy and the Student Code of Conduct. Breaching QUT’s Academic integrity policy is regarded as student misconduct and can lead to the imposition of penalties ranging from a grade reduction to exclusion from QUT.
