Overview

To support early career researchers as they plan, design and undertake a research project, this unit focuses on developing skills, practices and knowledges necessary to design and conduct educational research in innovative ways and to investigate current, innovative topics, issues and challenges. The unit is structured to enable knowledge of the commonalities and differences between various paradigms and approaches to be developed and to ensure consistency in the design of research. This unit is relevant for you if you are engaging in research projects, particularly if you are enrolled in the Master of Philosophy course. It will support you to conduct research within particular fields of interest. You will consider the design issues involved in addressing your research interest/focus/question.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a body of knowledge including recent developments in the field (CLO1.1).
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of research principles (CLO1.2).
  3. Use cognitive and critical reflection skills to demonstrate mastery of theoretical knowledge and professional practice or scholarship (CLO2.1).
  4. Use cognitive, technical and creative skills to investigate, analyse and synthesise complex information, problems, concepts and theories and to apply established theories to different bodies of knowledge or practice (CLO2.2).
  5. Demonstrate communication and technical research skills to justify and interpret theoretical propositions, methodologies, conclusions and professional decisions to specialist and non-specialist audiences (CLO2.3).
  6. Demonstrate technical and communication skills to design, evaluate, implement, analyse and theorise about developments that contribute to professional practice and scholarship (CLO2.4).
  7. Demonstrate application of knowledge and skills to plan and execute a substantial research based project (CLO3.2).

Content

Through the assessment and unit content, this unit will address the following topics:

1. The nature and processes by which significant research problems are conceptualised and generated. The processes involved in choosing an appropriate research design to address the focus of research in an ethical and rigorous manner.
2. Processes of critical literature review to focus and conceptualise a research topic.
3. Research Design/Methodology. The focus depends on the project proposals being developed by students with the support of their supervisors. The main focus in the unit content will be on developing understandings about the inherent assumptions in the chosen approaches to research design and methodology and the implications of this for the research to be undertaken.
4. Research Methods: Data Collection. The specific focus on methods will depend on the project proposals developed by students. The main focus of this aspect of the unit content is learning to choose methods that are coherent with the chosen methodology.
5. Research Methods: Data Analysis. The specific focus on methods will depend on the project proposals developed by students. The main focus of this aspect of the unit content is learning to choose methods that are coherent with the chosen methodology.
6. Ethical Issues in practical research applications. Content will include ethical issues in conceptualisation, design, data collection and security, interpretation and integrity, reporting and drawing conclusions from findings.
7. The research proposal. Preparation, discussion, writing, and presentation of a research proposal; planning the final thesis. The postgraduate student-supervisor relationship. The Confirmation and Final Seminar processes.

Learning Approaches

The unit will be taught in both internal and online mode. In internal mode, the unit will be taught using a mixture of lectures, workshops and tutorial sessions. In online mode, students will work with web-based materials and in real time online formats with unit staff and peers. You will engage in the blended learning opportunities throughout the semester. The learning approach in this unit is framed to support students as a cohort and to support each student's research supervision which will be concurrent with participation in this unit.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

You will receive feedback from their supervisors throughout the semester. You will also receive formative feedback from unit staff and other relevant researchers at key junctures throughout the unit.

Assessment

Overview

All assessment is to be developed in conjunction with the student's MPhil supervisors. Assessment items 1 and 2 will be assessed by the supervisor (Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory). Assessment 2 is a threshold assessment.

Unit Grading Scheme

S (Satisfactory) / U (Unsatisfactory)

Assessment Tasks

Assessment: Research Problem Statement and Literature Review

Research Problem Statement and Literature Review
Through a critical review of research literature on the candidate's topic, a research problem statement will be framed. This includes an explanation of the extent to which the proposed research develops new knowledge in the relevant disciplinary field, or the way in which existing knowledge is applied in a new way.

Academic Integrity

Students are expected to engage in learning and assessment at QUT with honesty, transparency and fairness. Maintaining academic integrity means upholding these principles and demonstrating valuable professional capabilities based on ethical foundations.

Failure to maintain academic integrity can take many forms. It includes cheating in examinations, plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, and submitting an assessment item completed by another person (e.g. contract cheating). It can also include providing your assessment to another entity, such as to a person or website.

You are encouraged to make use of QUT’s learning support services, resources and tools to assure the academic integrity of your assessment. This includes the use of text matching software that may be available to assist with self-assessing your academic integrity as part of the assessment submission process.

Further details of QUT’s approach to academic integrity are outlined in the Academic integrity policy and the Student Code of Conduct. Breaching QUT’s Academic integrity policy is regarded as student misconduct and can lead to the imposition of penalties ranging from a grade reduction to exclusion from QUT.
