Overview

This unit builds developmentally on previous fashion studio knowledge to navigate the structure and requirements of professional fashion contexts. It develops effective skills to communicate and realise design ideas in an integrated studio environment. It provides expanded knowledge and skills for the theory and practice of fashion design and includes practical skills and knowledge of pattern cutting, garment construction and applied technologies for the communication of design ideas. Embedded in this unit is a focus on ethical practices. The suite of Fashion Design Studio units form the foundation of learning for understanding fashion design in the Bachelor of Design (Fashion Design) program.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Research and synthesise a broad range of resources and apply conceptual thinking to a societal context.
  2. Demonstrate creative and analytical ways to solve design problems and realise design ideas involving complex fabrication.
  3. Apply professional communication elements, principles and processes specific to contemporary fashion design.
  4. Apply developed theoretical, industry and cultural fashion perspectives with a focus on ethical practices.

Content

This unit addresses developmental content such as:

  • Conceptualising, proposing and realising fashion design ideas for industry / professional fashion contexts
  • Tech packs and advanced technical drawings
  • Digital fashion communication using relevant programs
  • Fabric sourcing and utilisation for outerwear, including ethical sourcing
  • Pattern manipulation and complex garment construction
  • Sourcing, evaluating and synthesising historical and contemporary trend and contextual research
  • Applying purpose-specific methods, machinery and equipment
  • Developing theoretical, industry and cultural perspectives with a focus on ethics

Learning Approaches

In this applied unit you will be encouraged to combine theory and practice in an integrated / blended studio based learning environment. In face-to-face and blended/online experiences, you will cover the theory of fashion design. Studio classes will provide you with practical experiences to appreciate the critical connection between design and fabrication. There will be opportunities for class discussion and informal peer critique. Alongside this, your supervisors will support you to develop and refine your skills in an open, constructive and creatively supportive environment. You will be encouraged to develop your capabilities for critical and constructive dialogue, problem solving, research, exploration and questioning of traditional modes of fabrication. A range of online resources will support your learning experience.

Assessment

Overview

In this unit there are three assessment pieces, the first due early semester, the second in mid-semester and the third due at the end of semester. In each assessment task, you will respond to a design brief with an individual portfolio of conceptual and practical work.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment: Design Concept Development

Building on the understandings acquired in previous design studio units, you will respond to a socially contextualised professionally relevant brief. You will synthesise a variety of research to inform an ethically postitioned design concept, complemented by supporting materials developing your fabrication knowledge.
 
This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.

Assessment: Design Legacy

Responding to a socially contextualised professionally relevant brief and building on the learning from Assessment 1, you will expand on your initial research to develop and resolve on a collection of ethically informed designs, complemented by supporting documentation.

Assessment: Design Relaunch

In response to a socially contextualised brief and building on fashion design ideas explored in Assessment 1 and 2, you will realise and present a body of creative work. This work (including design illustrations, finished garments and supporting technical material) will articulate a theoretically and socially informed ethical position.

This assignment is not eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.
