Overview

This unit builds on the fundamental theories of previous treatment units, CSB047 Radiation Therapy Treatment 2, to further the application of knowledge to practice. You will need to gain practical skills in order to become competent radiation therapists and this unit provides you with the underpinning theory and simulated practice.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Analyse how radiation therapy clinical management is influenced by physiology and oncology for a range of tumour sites (MRPBA Domains 1.1a, 1.1b, 1.8b)
    Relates to: MRPPC2020: Domain 1, 1.1a, 1.1b, 1.8b
  2. Critically evaluate the clinical management options for a range of complex tumour sites (MPRBA Domains 1.3a, 1.4a, 1.4b, 1.5b, 1.6a, 1.6b, 1.6c, 1C.1a, 1C.1b, 1C.4b, 1C.4d, 1C.4e).
  3. Critically evaluate the importance of a holistic approach to clinical management and patient care (MRPBA Domains 1.5a, 2.4b, 3.1a, 3.1b, 3.1c, 3.1d, 3.1e, 3.1f, 3.1h, 3.2c).
  4. Evaluate the decisions affecting choice of modality for a range of tumour sites (MRPBA Domains 1.4a, 4.1a, 4.1b, 4.1c, 5.4b).

Practical sessions conducted on a superficial unit at a clinical site

The learning outcomes for this unit address elements of the domains for the professional capabilities for medical radiation practice for the Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia (MRPBA). Each learning outcome is mapped to the relevant MRPBA domain.

Learning Approaches

This unit adopts a blended delivery process which integrates face to face learning experiences with enriched software virtual environments in a simulation laboratory, for example, VERT (Virtual Environment for Radiotherapy Training) practicals and MOSAIQ (Patient Information System) practicals. The lectures will introduce you to key concepts relating to the principles and practice of oncology and technique and the practical sessions will consolidate your understanding. Problem-based learning will challenge you to apply your knowledge and understanding to realistic clinical situations for a range of common tumour sites. The superficial practicals will use hospital based superficial equipment to provide you with the opportunity to develop practical skills. Problem-based learning will challenge you to apply your knowledge and understanding to realistic clinical situations for a range of complex tumour sites.

This unit requires you to engage with the Canvas on-line learning environment, where additional information will be provided in the QUT Readings. For this unit, you will be provided with the essential information and opportunity to practice but you will need to supplement this with further reading and self-directed study. You will be required to reflect on your progress and performance in the unit at regular intervals.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

Feedback is provided throughout the semester, where work is reviewed and assessed. Feedback will aim to provide students with suggestions for further development of academic skills as well as suggestions for further study where appropriate.

Assessment

Overview

Assessment tasks will require you to provide evidence of your knowledge, skills and application of oncology and technique in Radiation Therapy, in a variety of formats, which are aligned with the learning outcomes of the unit and course.

Unit Grading Scheme

7- point scale

Assessment Tasks

Assessment: Case Study

In this assignment, you will be required to critically evaluate the most suitable treatment technique to be used in the treatment of a patient undergoing radiation therapy. This is directly related to your practice as a student radiation therapist, and you will be required to demonstrate the ability to contribute to professional discussions (either verbally or in writing) regarding the most appropriate treatment for a patient during your clinical placements.

This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.

The ethical and responsible use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools is authorised in this assessment. See the relevant assessment details in Canvas for specific guidelines.

Weight: 40
Length: 1500 words
Individual/Group: Individual
Due (indicative): Week 4
Related Unit learning outcomes: 2, 3

Assessment: Examination

In this assessment task, you will complete a written theory examination, consisting of short answer responses. Questions will require you to demonstrate your understanding and application of radiation therapy treatment principles to the management of patient cases.

The use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools is prohibited during this assessment.

Weight: 60
Individual/Group: Individual
Due (indicative): During central examination period
Central exam duration: 2:10 - Including 10 minute perusal
Related Unit learning outcomes: 1, 2, 3, 4

Academic Integrity

Academic integrity is a commitment to undertaking academic work and assessment in a manner that is ethical, fair, honest, respectful and accountable.

The Academic Integrity Policy sets out the range of conduct that can be a failure to maintain the standards of academic integrity. This includes, cheating in exams, plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion and contract cheating. It also includes providing fraudulent or altered documentation in support of an academic concession application, for example an assignment extension or a deferred exam.

You are encouraged to make use of QUT’s learning support services, resources and tools to assure the academic integrity of your assessment. This includes the use of text matching software that may be available to assist with self-assessing your academic integrity as part of the assessment submission process.

Breaching QUT’s Academic Integrity Policy or engaging in conduct that may defeat or compromise the purpose of assessment can lead to a finding of student misconduct (Code of Conduct – Student) and result in the imposition of penalties under the Management of Student Misconduct Policy, ranging from a grade reduction to exclusion from QUT.
