Unit Outline: Semester 1 2025, Gardens Point, Internal

Overview

This unit will continue to build on previous clinical placements to deal with a full range of complex patients and contexts. The period of clinical experience in this unit will enable you to gain experience as a supervised performer in advanced imaging procedures and modalities in addition to consolidating skills in general radiography and minor procedures while demonstrating safe practice.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

1. As an emerging radiographer, you will be required to assist and perform (under supervision) more specialised advanced techniques and imaging methods to ensure that you are conforming to the clinical placement requirements for a 4th year student and meeting the professional capabilities of the Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia (MRPBA).
2. As an emerging radiographer, you will image the full range of patient complexities in skeletal radiography and minor procedures including Operating Theater (OT) and trauma to ensure that you are conforming to the clinical placement requirements for a 4th year student and meeting the professional capabilities of the Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia (MRPBA).
3. As an emerging radiographer, you will be required to demonstrate interpersonal, communications, and appropriate patient care skills required in clinical practice to ensure that you are conforming to the clinical placement requirements for a 4th year student and meeting the professional capabilities of the Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia (MRPBA).
4. As an emerging radiographer, you will critically reflect on the outcomes of the imaging examinations you have participated in and comment on this performance to ensure that you are conforming to the clinical placement requirements for a 4th year student and meeting the professional capabilities of the Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia (MRPBA).
5. As an emerging radiographer, you will be required to demonstrate effective professional practice capabilities such as teamwork, and clinical reasoning to ensure that you are conforming to the clinical placement requirements for a 4th year student and meeting the professional capabilities of the Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia (MRPBA).

Content

Learning Approaches

This unit engages you in your learning through enabling you to apply the theoretical knowledge and skills developed both on campus and in previous clinical placements in a different clinical setting. You should be performing general radiography on a range of patient types and conditions, and assisting in the advanced imaging modalities. You will be supervised by clinical staff in an approved clinical department on a full-time basis.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

Feedback in this unit is provided to you in the following ways:

• comments on a case by case basis from your immediate supervisor
• feedback on the case study submissions submitted
• feedback from midpoint assessment by clinical supervisor
• end of placement feedback

Assessment

Overview

You will be assessed by the clinical staff on your clinical practical ability as demonstrated over the period of the placement. Informal feedback will be provided on a case by case basis from the immediate supervisor. In addition the clinical supervisor will complete an assessment form and provide feedback to you at the midpoint of the placement. This feedback will assist you in meeting the appropriate professional standards by the completion of the placement and your final assessment.

Submission of Clinical Practice Records of Clinical Experience: (Formative) - A record of rostered hours and examinations/procedures carried out as an assistant or supervised performer and verified by the supervisor must be submitted within one week of completion of the clinical period, along with the radiation badge. This is a mandatory requirement.

In order to gain an overall satisfactory result for this unit, you will be required to demonstrate a satisfactory level of achievement in each item of assessment. (This is an ungraded unit and the final result is satisfactory or unsatisfactory.)

Assessment tasks will require you to provide evidence of your knowledge, skills and application of Clinical Practice in Medical Imaging, in a variety of formats, which are aligned with the learning outcomes of the unit and course.
For the purposes of professional accreditation and demonstration of capabilities/competencies, students must achieve a satisfactory level of performance in both the theoretical and practical elements of the unit to achieve a passing grade. This is an ungraded unit and the final mark is satisfactory or unsatisfactory.
Submission must be accompanied by a record of rostered hours, clinical achievements list along with the radiation badge.
Threshold assessment conditions
In this unit, for you to be eligible to receive a passing grade, threshold assessment conditions apply. You are required to achieve a satisfactory result in all items of assessment to receive a S (satisfactory) result in the unit. If you who do not achieve a satisfactory result for an assessment task you are able to make one resubmission of this work. You are advised to seek feedback on your submission from the unit coordinator prior to resubmission.
N.B. Resubmission is not usually available for U (unsatisfactory) result for placement performance.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment: Case Study

A case study which reports on patient examinations you have performed and provide a critical reflection on the imaging outcomes. To be submitted via CANVAS.

Assessment: Professional Plans

2 Professional plans will be required for submission. Pre-clinical = the professional learning plan should  outline the areas of professional practice which you will be completing during the placement and how this relates to the activities and competencies required as per the Clinical Guide.

Post clinical = on completion of the placement you are to critically reflect on your performance and clinical ability, and evaluate what areas you need to consolidate during the subsequent placement period.

Assessment: Placement Performance

Clinical supervisor's assessment of clinical practice and professional capabilities. Student must perform a at satisfactory level of a 4th year student.

Threshold Assessment:

Satisfactory placement performance is mandatory to successfully complete this unit. Additional attempts are not usually available for placements.

Academic Integrity

Queensland Radiation use licence
QLD Health Student Placement requirements including:

• Immunisation/s (including Hepatitis B)
• Blue Card
• Current CPR Certificate is required.

Blue Card

A blue card is required to complete this unit. A blue card confirms that you have passed a screening of your criminal history (the Working with Children Check) and have been approved to work with children and young people. Costs

• Clinical uniform (requires purchase of QUT MRS shirt)
• Cost and organisation of obtaining current CPR Certificate is the responsibility of the student
• All Work Integrated Learning placement costs, including travel and accommodation expenses, are the responsibility of the student.

Risk Assessment Statement

Placement in a radiology department has inherent radiation risks, which are minimised by following safe work practices as taught during pre-clinical units. Students must adhere to the Radiation Safety and Protection Plan of the site they are rostered to, and wear the radiation dose monitoring device provided by QUT for the clinical placement. This radiation badge must be returned to QUT on completion of the placement.
