Overview
Magnetic Resonance Imaging is a specialised digital modality within the field of medical radiations. The applications of magnetic resonance imaging have a wide impact on differential diagnoses and subsequent radiographic examinations.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:
- Explain the physical principles of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
- Discuss the clinical applications and basic techniques used in MRI including interpretation of image appearances of normal anatomical structures and disease processes.
- Analyse the role of MRI in diagnostic imaging and its clinical context in relation to other imaging modalities, including appropriate person-centred care considerations such as positioning, patient co-operation and claustrophobia.

Learning Approaches
Blended delivery encompassing formal lectures, tutorial sessions and online activities.
Lectures provide the theoretical background information, incorporating case study image reviews, and interpretation.
Tutorial sessions provide small group discussions of image appearances and interaction with image viewing software. Access to Interactive radiographic resources through scheduled sessions allow additional development of image interaction skills. Formative quizzes will assist you to monitor your progress
Students may be offered an off-site visit and tutorials at clinical MRI site.
Feedback on Learning and Assessment
You will receive feedback on your quiz. Ongoing formative feedback is provided by participating in the tutorial session activities.
Assessment
Overview
For the purposes of professional accreditation and demonstration of capabilities/competencies, students must achieve a satisfactory level of performance in both the theoretical and practical elements of the unit to achieve a passing grade.
Threshold assessment conditions:
In this unit, for you to be eligible to receive a passing grade, threshold assessment conditions apply. If you do not achieve the pass level for an assessment task you are able to make one resubmission of this work for the minimum pass level, only when their achieved mark/grade is within 10% (or 1 grade) of the pass level for the assessment item. You are advised to seek feedback on your submission from the unit coordinator prior to resubmission.

Assessment Tasks
Assessment: Exam (theory)
End-semester theory examination. (Summative). Short answer questions.
The use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools is prohibited in this assessment.

Assessment: Exam (Practical)
As an emerging MRI radiographer, you should be able to recognise, analyse, interpret MRI images and common pathologic appearances. You should be able to escalate urgent findings on MRI images to the senior MRI radiographer or to the radiologist/emergency physician on duty.

Risk Assessment Statement
The only out of the ordinary risks associated with this unit relate to the site visit to a working MR department. You will receive instructions on safety issues and rules. You will be required to complete and submit a safety questionnaire prior to entering the MR facilities.
