Overview

This placement unit provides opportunity to participate in patient examinations in the clinical situation essential to further skills development for medical imaging students. Students will be able to observe, participate and reflect on the health practitioner roles and responsibilities in delivering team-based collaborative practice.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Perform general routine non-complex radiographic examinations of the chest, abdomen and skeleton under supervision whilst demonstrating safe practice.
  2. Assist in the clinical performance of minor procedures and bedside radiography.
  3. Demonstrate the interpersonal, communication and appropriate patient care skills required in clinical practice.
  4. Critically reflect on the outcomes of the imaging examinations you have participated in and professional behaviours gained/observed and report on this performance.

Content

General Skeletal Radiography.
- Bedside Radiography.
- Minor Procedures -

Students undertake a clinical block placement with consolidation of previous experiences in CSB022 (performance of examinations) including professional activities of  safe clinical practice
Examinations to be covered include (though are not exclusive):
- Upper limb
- Lower limb
- Pelvis and abdomen
- Chest incl. shoulder
- Entire vertebral column
- Mobile/bedside radiography
- Emergency department radiography

Learning Approaches

Supervised clinical experience attachment over a period of 4 to 5 weeks in an approved clinical department on a full-time basis. Students will observe and experience the role of Medical Imaging in team-based patient care.
A range of clinical placement preferences provides medical imaging students with imaging opportunities for diverse populations including considerations of culture, age, gender, body habitus, presentation and priority.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

Feedback will be provided during your placement by clinical staff supervising you on a case by case basis, along with overall feedback from the clinical supervisor at the completion of the placement.  You will receive feedback on your reflective journal and case study submissions.

Assessment

Overview

This is an ungraded unit and will be assessed as Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory.

For the purposes of professional accreditation and demonstration of capabilities/competencies, students must achieve a satisfactory level of performance in all assessment items of this unit.

Submission of Clinical Practice Records of Clinical Experience is a mandatory requirement. This record of rostered hours verified by the supervisor must be submitted within one week of completion of the clinical period, along with the radiation badge. Failure to submit will result in an unfinalised result until submission.

Threshold assessment conditions
In this unit, for you to be eligible to receive a passing grade, threshold assessment conditions apply. You are required to achieve a satisfactory result in all items of assessment to receive a S (satisfactory) result in the unit. If you do not achieve a satisfactory result for an assessment task you are able to make one resubmission of this work. You are advised to seek feedback on your submission from the unit coordinator prior to resubmission
N.B. Resubmission is not usually available for an unsatisfactory result for placement performance.

Academic Integrity

Students are expected to engage in learning and assessment at QUT with honesty, transparency and fairness. Maintaining academic integrity means upholding these principles and demonstrating valuable professional capabilities based on ethical foundations.

Failure to maintain academic integrity can take many forms. It includes cheating in examinations, plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, and submitting an assessment item completed by another person (e.g. contract cheating). It can also include providing your assessment to another entity, such as to a person or website.

You are encouraged to make use of QUT’s learning support services, resources and tools to assure the academic integrity of your assessment. This includes the use of text matching software that may be available to assist with self-assessing your academic integrity as part of the assessment submission process.

Further details of QUT’s approach to academic integrity are outlined in the Academic integrity policy and the Student Code of Conduct. Breaching QUT’s Academic integrity policy is regarded as student misconduct and can lead to the imposition of penalties ranging from a grade reduction to exclusion from QUT.
