Overview

This advanced unit engages with critical and contemporary issues concerned with the complex relationships among media, communication, and culture. It builds upon core knowledge and skills, and is designed to increase confidence in your analytical capacity and problem solving ability as a future media and communications professional. Drawing on the latest from our world-leading researchers, this unit will enable you to apply historical, economic, political, technological, and cultural perspectives when responding to real world issues facing the media and communications industries.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Apply appropriate concepts to assess and evaluate key issues and concerns within the media and communications industries and use those assessments to inform problem solving and decision making.
  2. Demonstrate sophisticated research skills and intellectual rigor in your investigations of key issues and concerns within the media and communications industries.
  3. Engage in respectful discussion and debate that reflects an understanding of the critical and professional complexities of contemporary media and communications.

Content

This unit will address such content as: 

  • Latest research in media, communication, and culture 
  • Real world issues facing the media and communications industries 
  • Historical, economic, political, technological, and cultural dynamics of media and communications industries 

Learning Approaches

Teaching and learning approaches in this unit may include lectures, tutorials, workshops and self-study. Some content and learning activities may also be provided online to supplement and support face-to-face learning (e.g., blended approaches). Some activities may also be delivered in intensive mode. Tutorials and related activities will provide opportunities for students to receive formative feedback from the teaching team. You will be expected to complete any prescribed self-study, including readings out of class, and in preparation for subsequent classes.

Assessment

Overview

This unit has three assessment items. The Critical Engagement and Professional Dialogue assessment will allow you to demonstrate the communication skills required for a career in the communication industries. Assessment 2, The Critical Reflection Portfolio requires you to submit 3 x 500 word critical responses to readings set in weeks 3, 6 and 9. You will then discuss and explain your responses with your tutor in an individual discussion that will be scheduled during tutorials in weeks 11-13. The third assessment, Report, applies theories and concepts introduced and explored in the unit to a current issue of relevance to the media industries. The issue(s) will be specified each semester by the unit coordinator.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment: Critical engagement and professional dialogue

This task requires you to demonstrate your developing critical communication skills and capacity for professional dialogue through your participation in peer group discussion exercises within your tutorial sessions.

These critical discussions will relate to unit content, readings and key concepts and expectations for how you contribute through the semester will be clearly outlined in the assessment criteria sheet.

Length: This activity is conducted within the normal tutorial duration.

Due (indicative): Progressive across the semester Your participation in tutorial discussions will be assessed progressively throughout the semester and formative feedback will be provided in mid-semester.

Assessment: Critical Reflection Portfolio

You will write 3 x 500 word critical responses to selected readings set in weeks 3, 6 and 9. For each of these weeks you will be provided with a prompt question. This assessment is designed to evaluate your ability to analyse and critically assess scholarly texts. There will be opportunity to draft your responses during tutorials in those weeks but they will be due for submission at the end of those weeks.

You will then be scheduled in a designated week (between weeks 11-13) to participate in a 10 minute critical discussion with your tutor focusing on the issues that you addressed in your three written responses.

The written response component of this assessment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.

The oral discussion component is not eligible for the 48-hour late submission period.

Assessment: Report

You will produce an industry issue report that explains why and for whom it is an issue and what the possible resolutions may be. In doing so, you will use theories and concepts from the unit to demonstrate the issue's significance and stakes to the media industries. The critical issue(s) will be specified by the unit coordinator in the full Assessment Details.

This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.

Academic Integrity

Academic integrity is a commitment to undertaking academic work and assessment in a manner that is ethical, fair, honest, respectful and accountable.
