Overview

This unit prepares students to analyse, interpret and make decisions based on the accounting and financial information produced by an organisation. Different types of accounting and financial information are introduced together with various techniques that are utilised to generate insights into organisational performance, risk management as well as management investment, finance and profit distribution decision making. This is essential knowledge for all management decision makers in an organisation. Real life limitations of the individual approaches and techniques covered will be introduced together with the complexities of making these management decisions. Topics introduced in the unit include: analysis of financial statements, valuation of different financial assets, management investment decision making, short and long-term planning and business risk management.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Understand and describe the financial environment that a business operates in
  2. Explain how managers make decisions in relation to a business’s performance including the management of risks, investments, finances, and profit distributions
  3. Demonstrate and apply knowledge of financial statement analysis and implications for short and long-term business planning
  4. Demonstrate written communication skills to effectively explain key concepts of the financial management of a business

Content

This unit covers how to analyse, interpret and make decisions based on the accounting and financial information produced by an organisation using financial management skills and tools.

Learning Approaches

This unit has a formal class contact time in lectures and tutorials of approximately three hours (lecture one hour, tutorial two hours). Tutorial questions are to be completed prior to the tutorial as the tutorials provide the forum to discuss the materials covered and difficulties associated with applying different analytical skills.

Outside of lectures and tutorials, students are encouraged to attend staff consultation times to gain additional assistance with the materials covered and feedback on their progress.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

Students will receive feedback in various forms throughout the semester, which may include:

  • Informal: worked examples, such as verbal feedback in class, personal consultation
  • Formal: in writing, such as checklists (e.g. criteria sheets), written commentary
  • Direct: to individual students, either in written form or in consultation
  • Indirect: to whole class

Assessment

Overview

The assessment in this unit aims to support your achievement of the unit learning outcomes and course assurance of learning goals. The assessment has been designed in order to allow you to:

  • receive feedback on your learning as you progress toward the development of knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes (formative assessment);
  • demonstrate your learning in order to achieve a final grade (summative assessment).

Students may be required to attend campus or an assessment centre for the purposes of assessment, regardless of the attendance mode for the unit

Assessment: Financial Analysis Report

To enhance students' teamwork, analytical, and communication skills, this assessment requires the use of current technologies to analyse real-world companies and write a comprehensive report summarising the analysis performed and investment decision.

This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.

Weight: 35
Length: 3,500 words - 10% above the word limit is acceptable. Grading will be based upon the text that is within the word limit (or 10% above).

There are no out-of-the-ordinary risks associated with lectures or tutorials in this unit.
