Overview

This unit will enable students to develop an appreciation of the audit function and to better understand the main aspects of auditing and how it fits into the overall business environment. The unit builds on other accounting units studied as part of the overall course and applies other concepts and techniques previously learned to this specific area.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Identify and discuss the phases of the overall audit process
  2. Apply auditing concepts, techniques, standards and theory to practical applications
  3. Analyse a range of auditing issues and orally present considered responses and recommendations
  4. Discuss current auditing regulatory, legal and ethical issues and the process of change in auduting practice and identify the auditor's perspective on accounting problems.

Content

This unit covers the regulatory and ethical frameworks within which assurance services are provided, the processes and techniques utilised by assurance service providers and other related audit and assurance issues. Students should acquire knowledge of auditing and its procedures, auditing standards and other professional pronouncements. Generic capabilities being developed include discipline knowledge, ethical and global perspectives, communication skills and risk management processes as they relate to auditing. The issues covered in auditing are techniques practiced both in Australia and internationally.

Learning Approaches

The focus of university study is self-directed search of knowledge. Weekly learning sessions, textbooks, exams and other resources are provided to assist in your learning experience. Therefore, students are encouraged to attend ALL learning sessions, read required reading materials in order to fully grasp and appreciate the concepts of Auditing and Assurance services.

Weekly sessions consist of two components - theoretical coverage of audit issues, standards and auditing concepts and the application of these techniques and issues to practical auditing examples. This strategy exposes students to all aspects of the conduct of an audit and associated auditing issues. Tutorial questions on each sessional topic further develop students' understanding and comprehension of the theoretical and practical aspects of auditing.

The oral presentations aim to consolidate students understanding of the basic auditing concepts and to develop a more in-depth knowledge and critical thinking about the issues in auditing.

The online quiz and the final exam aim to further test students' knowledge on pertinent audit and assurance issues.

 

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

Students will receive feedback in various forms throughout the semester which may include:

  • Informal: worked examples, such as verbal feedback in class, personal consultation
  • Formal: in writing, such as checklists (e.g. criteria sheets), written commentary
  • Direct: to individual students, either in written form or in consultation
  • Indirect: to the whole class

Assessment

Overview

The assessment aims to support your achievement of the learning outcomes for this Unit. It has been designed in order to allow you to both:

  • receive feedback on your learning as you progress toward the development of knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes (formative assessment); and
  • demonstrate your learning in order to achieve a final grade (summative assessment).

Students may be required to attend campus or an assessment centre for the purposes of assessment, regardless of the attendance mode for the unit.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment: Oral Viva Voce

This assignment is a combination of a written and oral exam that simulates a meeting with an audit team member/manager/partner to discuss the business risk and audit risk.

Students are required to prepare and present solutions to the assigned task. The student submits a written report that involves a case study of a real world company's business and audit risk and will be a maximum of 1,000 words +/- 10%. A copy of presentation notes will also be submitted by the group. 

The Oral Viva Voce will be around 20 minutes in duration. The student will orally report in the form of presentation, and then respond to critical comments and queries from the audience in the meeting.

This is an individual assessment. Separate details will be provided on the Canvas site.

Assessment: Online Quiz

The online quiz will test students' knowledge on pertinent audit and assurance issues based on content from weeks 1-4 of Semester. The quiz will incorporate multi-choice questions. The quiz will be worth 20% of the final grade. Separate details will be provided on the Canvas site.

Assessment: Final Examination

Written questions covering both practical and theoretical auditing issues. It will cover course material from weeks 1-12.

This examination will be an invigilated face-to-face exam undertaken either on campus or at an examination centre.
