Overview

Management accounting is the sourcing, analysis and communication of decision-relevant information - both financial and non-financial – used by firms to generate value and maintain a competitive advantage. Accordingly, all firms, regardless of industry type or size, make use of a range of management accounting practices. Accountants need to know about these concepts, techniques, and sustainibility practices used by firms to allocate costs to products or services; plan, control and measure performance; and be able to identify and provide management with relevant information to inform their decision making.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Describe and discuss current management accounting knowledge and apply technology skills appropriate for real world
  2. Perform key calculations using different costing and budgeting methods in different management accounting contexts
  3. Exercise critical thinking and judgement for decision making and planning across a range of management accounting contexts
  4. Demonstrate and apply knowledge of socially responsible behaviour in analysing and addressing business issues in national and international business contexts.
  5. Professionally communicate management accounting knowledge, advice and recommendations in written form

Content

The content of this unit has been selected with the specified learning outcomes in mind. The majority of the unit examines the accumulation and analysis of information prepared for the current needs of management, e.g. data for budgeting, product costing, decision-making and performance evaluation. Management accounting focuses on techniques practiced both in Australia and overseas.

The generic capabilities this unit develops are:-

  • critical thinking and judgement; and
  • ethical perspectives.

Learning Approaches

This unit encourages you to conceptually link the theoretical aspects of the unit with the practical aspects, which will enable you to apply your knowledge to a wide variety of accounting situations. There are three elements to the learning and teaching strategies employed in this unit:

1. lectures,
2. tutorials, and
3. weekly reading of prescribed text and additional materials.


All three are included to enable you to fulfil the aim and objectives of the unit as discussed above.

All learning material other than the prescribed text will be made available online using the unit's Canvas site.

Lectures will provide an introduction to the topics and will complement rather than substitute the textbook. Lectures will also include relatively simple worked examples to illustrate management accounting techniques and processes. The value of attending lectures is you can see problems being worked, rather than just being presented with the outcome of the process.

The basic understanding provided in lectures will be further developed through tutorials and the weekly practice questions. Fully-worked solutions to all questions will be provided on-line after the tutorial.

Tutorials commence in week 2. You are required to attempt the tutorial questions before the tutorial. The tutorials give you:

  • the chance to resolve any questions;
  • the opportunity to see 'how' problems are worked; and
  • discuss with tutors 'why' something is done a certain way.

Attendance at tutorials is strongly recommended.

To ensure that you do not get behind in the work, you are encouraged to review all learning material and complete all tutorial questions in the allotted week.

Proper attention to the teaching and learning strategies should enable students to meet the assessment requirements of the unit. You will be assessed on your developing knowledge, understanding and skills using a range of inter-related assessment methods.

 

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

Students will receive feedback in various forms throughout the semester which may include:

  • Informal: worked examples, such as verbal feedback in class, personal consultation
  • Formal: in writing, such as checklists (e.g. criteria sheets), written commentary
  • Direct: to individual students, either in written form or in consultation
  • Indirect: to the whole class

Assessment

Overview

The assessment aims to support your achievement of the learning outcomes for this Unit. It has been designed in order to allow you to both:

  • receive feedback on your learning as you progress toward the development of knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes (formative assessment); and
  • demonstrate your learning in order to achieve a final grade (summative assessment).

Students may be required to attend campus or an assessment centre for the purposes of assessment, regardless of the attendance mode for the unit.

Assessment: Multiple Choice Quiz

An on-line quiz covering weeks 1-4 (classes and textbook readings) will assess your management accounting knowledge, application of technology skills and performance of key calculations.

Assessment: Management Accounting Report

Acting in the role of an accountant, you will have the opportunity to apply management accounting processes and techniques to an organisational situation. You will prepare a report that provides management with relevant information to inform their decision making.


Formative or Summative: Formative and Summative

Business Capabilities (AoL goals): KS (1.2), HO (2.2), PC (3.1)

This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.

Weight: 25
Length: Report comprises written (no more than 1,000 words) and practical elements. 10% above the word limit is acceptable. Grading will be based upon the text that is within the word limit (or 10% above).
Individual/Group: Individual
Due (indicative): Week 10

Assessment: Final Exam

The final examination will consist of both practical and theoretical questions to assess your application of  management accounting knowledge, analysis and judgement to inform decision making, and consideration of socially responsible behaviour.

This examination will be an invigilated face-to-face exam undertaken either on campus or at an examination centre.
