Learning Approaches

This Capstone unit guides students through a process of independent study with scaffolded support from project supervisors and industry partners. Students work to apply discipline knowledge to real-world challenges. During lectures and discipline-specific tutorials, students will develop and practise academic and industry research skills. Support for this learning is in the form of lectures, discipline-specific tutorials focusing on theory, authentic business and discipline-specific methods, real-world application, readings, online resources, and WIL preparation classes. As the unit progresses, students transition to more independent, self-directed learning where they develop and refine their thinking in response to critical inputs from their discipline project supervisors and industry partners. Students learn to seek and respond effectively to peer and supervisor inputs and client feedback. They will also learn to critique and refine ideas and solutions through ongoing critical analysis and reflection on theory and practice in the context of a real-world industry challenge.

This unit requires students to work in teams within the semester. Accordingly, students enrolling in this unit are expected to consistently engage with team discussions and equitably contribute to the work produced by the team. If students know they will be absent from classes and/or be unavailable to liaise (digitally) with teams for a prolonged period of the semester (i.e., due to work commitments, travel plans, etc.), please consider taking this unit in a semester that you can more equitably commit your time to working with others for completing assessment.

Academic Integrity

Students are expected to engage in learning and assessment at QUT with honesty, transparency and fairness. Maintaining academic integrity means upholding these principles and demonstrating valuable professional capabilities based on ethical foundations.

Failure to maintain academic integrity can take many forms. It includes cheating in examinations, plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, and submitting an assessment item completed by another person (e.g. contract cheating). It can also include providing your assessment to another entity, such as to a person or website.

You are encouraged to make use of QUT’s learning support services, resources and tools to assure the academic integrity of your assessment. This includes the use of text matching software that may be available to assist with self-assessing your academic integrity as part of the assessment submission process.

Further details of QUT’s approach to academic integrity are outlined in the Academic integrity policy and the Student Code of Conduct. Breaching QUT’s Academic integrity policy is regarded as student misconduct and can lead to the imposition of penalties ranging from a grade reduction to exclusion from QUT.
