Overview
This language unit is suitable for students with native or near-native competencies in both Chinese and English and who have an interest or need to work with business-related documents and high-level written communications in both languages. The unit teaches basic translation theories and helps students to develop their skills through a large amount of varied translation practice using real world materials including general business correspondence and sample texts in areas of advertising and marketing. In addition to the translation practice, students are introduced to business Chinese and English, which will help them to improve their skills in writing business documents. The knowledge and skills gained through this unit will provide a competitive edge for students who aspire to work in international business and trade companies requiring people with skills in translating business documents between Chinese and English. Admission may require an interview.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding about the similarities and differences between Chinese and English languages as related to translation of business texts.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the features of the English and Chinese languages that are typically used in business contexts.
- Apply strategies and skills in writing formal (business) correspondence and in translating texts on a range of business topics between Chinese and English.
- Apply collaborative skills to complete good quality team translation tasks and projects.
- Demonstrate sensitivity to the cultural differences and appropriateness in translating the business texts between Chinese and English.
Content
The major contents to be covered in this unit include a brief introduction of translation strategies and translation methods, analysis of translation pieces, study of English and Chinese language usage and of writing formats for business texts, and completing written and translation exercises in the areas of business letters/emails, advertising and marketing.

Learning Approaches
This unit consists of lectures and tutorials. The lectures focus on introducing translation skills, translation strategies, the analysis of the differences between Chinese and English language usages and writing formats for business texts. The tutorials focus on providing students with feedback and help towards their translation practice.
Feedback on Learning and Assessment
Students will receive feedback in various forms throughout the semester, which may include:
Informal: worked examples, such as verbal feedback in class, personal consultation
Formal: in writing, such as checklists (e.g. criteria sheets), written commentary
Direct: to individual students, either in written form or in consultation
Indirect: to whole class

Overview
Students may be required to attend campus or an assessment centre for the purposes of assessment, regardless of the attendance mode for the unit.

Assessment Tasks
Assessment: Examination (invigilated)
Written translation examination: business texts translation, multiple choice questions, and proof-reading of translated texts.
Formative or Summative: Formative and Summative.

Assessment: Team Project
Translation Assignment: Passage translation in the covered areas. The assignment is composed of two parts: One part is translation of an English passage into Chinese, and the other part is translation of a Chinese passage into English.
Formative or Summative: Formative and Summative.
Business Capabilities (AoL goals): KS (1.1), HO (2.1), TS (4.2)
This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.
Assessment: Examination (invigilated)
Written translation examination: business texts translation, multiple choice questions, proof-reading of translated texts, and business letter/email writing.

Academic Integrity

Lecture notes and translation practice sheets. Students are expected to print them out for lecture and tutorial sessions. No textbook is required.
