Overview

This unit provides you with opportunities to broaden your professional capabilities that will assist you in your future legal career.  You will develop these capabilities through the practical application of your legal and procedural knowledge in interviewing, negotiation, file management and other related activities.  The capabilities you will develop include professional engagement, effective communication, adapting to change and developing resilience. 

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Collaborate with clients and others in a culturally competent manner to identify options for dealing with complex client problems (Course Learning Outcomes 1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 3.1, 3.4, 3.5)

Learning Approaches

The unit's content and its organisation are designed to facilitate development of capabilities that will assist you in a career as a legal practitioner and related professional careers.

The unit adopts a blended learning approach, which includes online briefing note and online problem-solving activities for you to work on supported by online resources and authentic legal practice scenarios. You will also have face-to-face or online access to peers and lectures to support you when working with problem material. Peer review and collaborative learning will also be utilised.

You will also engage in face-to-face or on-line peer interactions, supported by lectures to assist and guide you when working through the activities.

 

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

Feedback in this unit is provided to you in the following ways:

  • You will find guidance for completing problems in the 'how to do' for the task. Some guidance in the 'how to do' will provide formative feedback in that it anticipates questions that you may have when completing the problem.
  • You may seek additional advice and assistance from staff either during briefing sessions or online.
  • You will receive progressive feedback on work as it is submitted.  Elements of this feedback will be formative as it will assist you to prepare subsequent related items of work.
  • Peer review and collaborative learning will also be utilised to provide you with additional feedback and group learning.

Assessment

Overview

The assessment items in this unit are designed to provide evidence that you can apply professional capabilities in interactions with clients and colleagues. 

Most assessment items have marks awarded to them according to the relevant Criterion Referenced Assessment (CRA) sheet, whilst other assessment items are assessed on a 'Satisfactory/Not Satisfactory' scale (again with reference to the relevant CRA sheet).

You must complete all assessment items to a pass or satisfactory standard based on the relevant CRA sheet in addition to accumulating sufficient marks to pass the unit.

For this assessment you will collaborate with other students to represent clients in a complex legal matter, which will involve you demonstrating cultural competence and may involve interviews, team meetings, oral presentations, negotiation and mediation and client file management.
