Overview

This unit develops the theoretical and practical approaches to using new and emerging digital technologies across the curriculum to connect and engage with students. It also offers the opportunity to create learning experiences for an authentic teaching and learning context, through QUT's collaboration with Fortitude Valley State Secondary College (FVSSC). Working both individually and collaboratively, you will participate in activities that require you to explore new schooling contexts in Australia and internationally, investigate technologies and apply them across all learning areas. The aims of this unit are to enable you to acquire skills and knowledge related to (i) introducing and using new and emerging technologies across a range of learning areas, and (ii) theoretical and practical perspectives associated with using these technologies in your future classroom.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of using digital technologies to support learners and enhance learning and teaching.
  2. Critically reflect on theories in order to implement 21st Century teaching strategies using digital technologies to engage students in their learning.
  3. Create and maintain safe and inclusive learning environments where digital technologies are used ethically.
  4. Apply the principles, methods, and strategies of using digital technologies leading to the development of innovative pedagogical approaches.
  5. Identify and plan professional learning needs and institutional needs when introducing new and emerging technologies into the classroom.

Content

In this unit, you will learn:

  • To apply theoretical frameworks for and practical approaches to using digital technologies in the learning and teaching to design curriculum learning using new and emerging technologies;
  • Strategies to use a wide range of innovative pedagogical approaches effectively, safely and ethically in your teaching. For example, this unit may investigate ways in which mobile devices can be used within the curriculum to support and enhance the teaching and learning process; and
  • To consider relevant research and reflect upon the requirements when introducing new digital technologies.

Learning Approaches

In this unit you will learn through engaging in the following:

A range of blended learning approaches including learning forums, hands on sessions, group work, presentations, discussions and self-directed, online learning activities where you will engage in collaborative activity with peers and tutors. Modelled teaching strategies will provide examples of pedagogies and learning strategies for developing knowledgeable, confident and enthusiastic learners using digital tools.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

You will gain feedback in this unit by participating in sessions with and peers and academics. You will be provided with peer and academic formative feedback during activities, through general comments in the preparatory activities directed at assessment work. You will receive written feedback via criteria sheets for the summative assessment tasks.

Academic Integrity

Students are expected to engage in learning and assessment at QUT with honesty, transparency and fairness. Maintaining academic integrity means upholding these principles and demonstrating valuable professional capabilities based on ethical foundations.

Failure to maintain academic integrity can take many forms. It includes cheating in examinations, plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, and submitting an assessment item completed by another person (e.g. contract cheating). It can also include providing your assessment to another entity, such as to a person or website.

You are encouraged to make use of QUT’s learning support services, resources and tools to assure the academic integrity of your assessment. This includes the use of text matching software that may be available to assist with self-assessing your academic integrity as part of the assessment submission process.

Further details of QUT’s approach to academic integrity are outlined in the Academic integrity policy and the Student Code of Conduct. Breaching QUT’s Academic integrity policy is regarded as student misconduct and can lead to the imposition of penalties ranging from a grade reduction to exclusion from QUT.
