Overview

Numeracy is a crucial component of education; however, many learners continue to cite concerns over their numeracy skills well into adulthood. Educators across disciplines and areas are needed in this area who have understandings, skills and expertise around potential barriers and equity issues in numeracy education. This unit will provide you with opportunities to explore several potential issues in numeracy education, and may include psychological, socioeconomic, cultural and/or biological factors. This unit will build on knowledge and expertise gained from core units of mathematics already studied as well as numeracy concepts explored within other curriculum subjects. This unit is critical to position you as a responsive, inclusive and resilient numeracy educator in your setting.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of barriers and equity issues in numeracy education.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of strategies for inclusive numeracy environments.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of skills and strategies that can be used to evaluate interventions within numeracy education to improve student learning.
  4. Demonstrate an ability to design professional learning to improve practice and communicate this knowledge to colleagues.

Content

This unit will cover the following:

  • barriers/issues for learners in numeracy education
  • numeracy interventions
  • contemporary research and theories
  • international, national and state educational policy and curriculum documents/guidelines
  • equity issues in numeracy education, which may include psychological, socioeconomic, cultural and/or biological barriers/issues
  • ways to evaluate numeracy intervention programs,
  • communicating about numeracy, numeracy education and numeracy intervention strategies to colleagues.

Learning Approaches

In this unit you will learn through engaging in the following:

  • Workshops (online and/or face-to-face);
  • Online self-directed learning;
  • Personal research and readings; and;
  • Collaborative activities with peers.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

You will gain feedback in this unit through participation in workshops with academics and peers. You will receive written feedback on your summative assessment from teaching staff. Feedback to you is provided through opportunities for reflection, discussion and peer-feedback in workshops and online activities via QUT Canvas.

Assessment

Overview

There are two pieces of assessment for this unit:

  1. A research poster drawing on what you have learnt about barriers and issues with numeracy ;
  2. A professional presentation of numeracy intervention which connects with Assessment 1 and builds an intervention strategy that you will prepare as a presentation for colleagues.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment: Research Poster

As a future educator of numeracy in your settings, you will need to understand barriers and issues that exist for becoming a numerate citizen. You will be required to identify a potential barrier/issue for numeracy education and use relevant scholarly literature to explore this, including the impact it has upon teachers of numeracy. This will form the foundation for your second assessment.

This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.

Assessment: Professional presentation of numeracy intervention

This task requires you to design and record a a short film focusing on presenting the barrier/issue addressed in task one with the aim of informing other educators.

This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.
