Overview

This unit will introduce you to core counselling techniques and communication skills that underpin effective helping strategies used by counsellors in a range of helping professions. The unit will assist you to understand and use particular skills that help to increase your own self-awareness and awareness of the needs of others. The aim of effective counselling is to develop the capacity of clients to problem-solve and to work towards their goals and potential.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a body of knowledge including understanding recent developments in the field of counselling (CLO1.1).
  2. Demonstrate cognitive and critical reflection skills to demonstrate mastery of theoretical knowledge and professional practice or scholarship of counselling (CLO2.1).
  3. Demonstrate technical and communication skills to design, evaluate, implement, analyse and theorise about developments in counselling that contribute to professional practice or scholarship (CLO2.4).
  4. Apply knowledge of counselling theories and counselling skills with creativity and initiative to new situations in professional practice and/or for further learning with high level personal autonomy and accountability (CLO3.1).

Content

This unit will cover the following topics:

  • Define the issues relating to self as they impinge upon our relationships with others.
  • Examine the development of counselling psychology and the personal characteristics associated with effective counsellors.
  • Observe and practice the following counselling/helping skills: observation, attending, open and closed questioning, paraphrasing, reflecting feeling, reflecting content, summarising, normalising and challenging.
  • Developing a counselling relationship.
  • Introduce some counselling theories with particular use in the school setting and apply these to practical situations.

Learning Approaches

The unit will be delivered in workshop/seminar style over four full days of  intensive on-line sessions. Attendance is mandatory to support your success in learning and with assessment. Assessment will be due throughout the six-week teaching period. There will be no further classes after the intensive on-line sessions.

Synchronous and asynchronous learning approaches will be used which include video, interactive group learning, practice sessions using role play, demonstrations, group discussions and lectures. Regular opportunities will be provided during the intensive on-line sessions for practicing counselling skills and strategies.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

You will gain feedback in this unit by participating in discussion and activities that contribute to your understanding and skill for completion of your assessment tasks. This will occur during the intensive on-line sessions with academics and peers and via email (as needed) with academics throughout the teaching period.

  1. You will produce a video-recording of yourself undertaking a counselling session that demonstrates your use of counselling skills studied during the unit. You will also write a critique/evaluation of your use of skills during the counseling session.
  2. You will write a critical review of an area of literature related to counselling.
