Overview

Digital Communication Advanced Project 1 is the first of two 24-credit-point capstone project units that allow you to integrate and apply advanced knowledge of digital communication theory, methods, principles and skills in the context of a significant digital communication project. The unit supports the implementation of a substantial and appropriately scoped project that can take various forms including research and/or an industry partner project. Supported by supervisors, you will develop and execute an approved project. To complete the full 48-credit-point advanced project also requires the completion of CCN312 Digital Communication Advanced Project 2 in a subsequent semester.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Identify and scope research problems in digital media
  2. Select and justify appropriate research methods
  3. Critically evaluate scholarly literature relevant to identified research problems
  4. Apply academic writing skills to produce research proposals
  5. Autonomously, professionally and ethically initiate and execute research in digital communication
  6. Design culturally appropriate communication artefacts to engage a variety of audiences.

Content

This unit will cover:

  • identifying research problems
  • designing and scoping research projects
  • developing research project proposals
  • identifying ethics considerations and writing research ethics applications
  • applying appropriate methodologies
  • collecting and analysing data

The nature of this content will vary depending on the specific characteristics and requirement of the approved projects.

Learning Approaches

This unit is taught via a blended approach that combines elements of face-to-face and online delivery and may include intensive delivery.

This unit primarily adopts a self-directed learning approach, where you are expected to execute a scholarly research or industry project. You will be allocated a supervisor who will provide regular individual or group consultations. A cohort-based workshop approach to project supervision will be undertaken, where you will meet regularly with your supervisor and to share your project progress and challenges, receive peer and supervisor feedback and to support the development of key capabilities required to successfully conduct your project.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

You will be in regular contact with your supervisor who will provide you with feedback on your work. These regular meetings may be a combination of individual or group face-to-face or virtual meetings. Opportunities for peer feedback on your research and writing will be provided in workshops and/or via online tools.

Assessment

Overview

In this unit you will complete three assessment tasks:

1. Dissertation Milestone 1 - This task draws on key understandings about the process of research in digital media.

2. Digital Poster - This task draws on understandings about the presenting research to public audiences.

3. Dissertation Milestone 2 - This task expands on the Milestone 1 document to draw on published research, debates in digital media, research methodologies and industry standard tools to complete a project proposal, which will be expanded on in CCN312 for Dissertation Milestone 3.

Unit Grading Scheme

7- point scale

Assessment Tasks

Assessment: Dissertation Milestone 1

In this Unit you will produce the first half of an academic dissertation (Milestone 1 and 2) that will be finalised in CCN312 (Milestone 3). For Assessment 1, you will produce an interim report that addresses a social, cultural or economic problem that requires the use of media and communications approaches to research. This initial report (Milestone 1) contributes to the report completed for Assessment 3 (Milestone 2). The report should detail the problem/s question being addressed or the opportunity being pursued, a literature review of scholarly and industry publications relevant to the problem, the methodological approach the report will take, successes, challenges, risks, and a forecast of the project schedule and next steps.

This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.

The poster will include written and visual elements, including a one minute video overview of the project. The poster should be designed to engage the audience.  During the conference you will need to be available to share your poster with interested conference delegates (peers, your supervisor, researchers and industry guests).

Academic Integrity

Academic integrity is a commitment to undertaking academic work and assessment in a manner that is ethical, fair, honest, respectful and accountable.

The Academic Integrity Policy sets out the range of conduct that can be a failure to maintain the standards of academic integrity. This includes, cheating in exams, plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion and contract cheating. It also includes providing fraudulent or altered documentation in support of an academic concession application, for example an assignment extension or a deferred exam.

You are encouraged to make use of QUT’s learning support services, resources and tools to assure the academic integrity of your assessment. This includes the use of text matching software that may be available to assist with self-assessing your academic integrity as part of the assessment submission process.

Breaching QUT’s Academic Integrity Policy or engaging in conduct that may defeat or compromise the purpose of assessment can lead to a finding of student misconduct (Code of Conduct – Student) and result in the imposition of penalties under the Management of Student Misconduct Policy, ranging from a grade reduction to exclusion from QUT.

Risk Assessment Statement

For risks associated with using campus buildings or facilities, refer to the Tier 1 General Health and Safety Induction.

You are advised to back-up your digital files on a regular basis to ensure work is not lost if there is a hardware failure. Information about the free file storage provided by QUT for students is available on the Storing your files page.

QUT’s required risk assessment process will need to be undertaken for all projects. Your project will not be approved until the required risk assessments, including ethical clearance requirements, are completed and approved. Different projects may have different risks associated with them and therefore it is mandatory that a project risk assessment is completed and approved.
