Overview
This foundational computer programming unit imparts core programming knowledge and skills, strengthen computational thinking, and cultivate your ability to solve engineering problems using computer programs, thus laying a solid foundation for subsequent specialized units.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:
- Explain the fundamental theories of computer programming, including program structure, characteristics, the principles of structured programming, programming logic, and common algorithms at an introduced level.
- Communicate in written form about programming projects, including regulatory and ethical considerations at an introduced level.
- Use programming language development environments effectively, apply fundamental debugging techniques, and understand the purpose and process of program testing while developing standardized coding habits and style at an introduced level.
- Analyse problems from an engineering perspective by abstracting, identifying core elements, simplifying complexity, and solving them step-by-step using structured programming methods at an introduced level.

Learning Approaches
This unit is delivered in hybrid on-campus/ online mode. You can on average expect to spend at least 9.5 hours per week during the teaching period in preparing for and attending scheduled classes, preparing and completing assessment tasks as well as independent study and consolidation of your learning.
Studios(Experiments) will be led by experienced engineers, and focus on the practical application of concepts presented in the weekly videos and other learning resources. These sessions are an opportunity to engage in a dialogue with members of the teaching team regarding the weekly topics, simulation exercises and assessment tasks. Studios will typically involve hand-on demonstration of simulation practice.
You will be provided with learning resources using its DUT's LMS site, which you can access flexibly to prepare for your timetabled learning activities. Videos and MOOC/SPOC provide complete on-line learning resources, The material covered should be immediately applicable to exercises in studios and tutorials, and assessment task.
Feedback on Learning and Assessment
Formative feedback will occur trough verbal teaching team and peer interactions throughout the teaching period. Formal written or electronic feedback will be provided for each assessment task with reference to the assessments criteria and standards which will be shared with you according to DUT requirements. Marked assessment will include written feedback from markers against the criteria.

Overview
This unit imparts basic knowledge about Programming Design Thinking and Methods B, which is assessed during the teaching period through lab sessions, After-class assignments, and a project.
An Assessment Task Description, Assessment Detail, and marking Rubric will be provided for each of the Laboratories, Portfolio, and the Project.
You will sit an invigilated written examination during the DUT central examination period to assess your overall learning in the unit.

Your understanding of fundamental theories in computer programming will be assessed, including programming structure and characteristics, and mastery of basic programming principles, design thinking, and algorithms. It gauges your programming ability and capacity to apply standards, coding conventions, as well as to consult technical documentation, in order to develop complete programming solutions.

Assessment: Portfolio
The portfolio will demonstrate your progressive ability to implement complete programs based on coding standards, conventions, and technical references. It assesses your ability to operate programming development environments, use standard software tools, and apply basic debugging techniques. You will develop an engineering mindset that enables you to abstract and analyze problems, identify core issues, simplify complexity, and solve problems progressively.

Assessment: Project
Your practical abilities in programming and debugging within standard development environments will be assessed. It fosters an engineering mindset that encourages abstracting, analyzing, identifying key issues, simplifying complex problems, and solving them step by step.
The assessment gauges your ability to implement complete programs based on coding standards, conventions, and technical references, your grasp of programming fundamentals, including structure, features, core principles, problem-solving approaches, and commonly used algorithms.
The assessment gauges your ability to use programming development environments and conventional software tools, as well as their grasp of basic debugging methods. It aims to cultivate an engineering mindset to abstract, analyze, identify key issues, simplify complex problems, and solve them step by step.
The report shows your ability to develop complete solutions by applying standards, coding conventions, and reviewing technical documentation. Through report writing, you will develop correct design thinking, awareness of national laws/regulations, compliance awareness, professional ethics, and a spirit of innovation.

Assessment: Examination

Your ability to complete programming tasks using standards, conventions, and technical references will be evaluated.

You will be expected to use software (C++) that will be made available to you in DUT computer laboratories to complete some parts of your assessment. Instruction and training will be provided to you on the use of this software.
