Overview
This foundational unit gives an understanding of, and basic applied skills in, best practice social media management within professional communication contexts. It introduces you to the principles, tools and techniques of professional social media practice, social media presence and the development, implementation and analysis of digital communication strategies. It also provides opportunities to apply them in the ever-evolving social media landscape through industry engagement.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:
- Demonstrate understanding of social media fundamentals
- Critically evaluate how organisations use social media
- Collaboratively design, plan and manage a social media strategy for a business and evidence knowledge of how to evaluate its effectiveness
- Demonstrate understanding of how to create and curate social media content on different platforms and how to engage social media audiences.
Content
This unit will address content such as:
- building professional social media presence
- social media strategy design principles
- processes for implementing and managing social media strategy
- tools and techniques for social media content creation, curation and analysis
- basic digital media metrics.
Learning Approaches
This unit takes a blended approach to learning and teaching. You will be provided with both eContent and timetabled activities such as tutorials and workshops. eContent will be clearly identified on your Canvas site for you to engage with on a weekly basis before your classes. eContent could include videos, readings, self-reflection and/or peer activities designed to enhance your learning experience. During the timetabled activities, the unit coordinator and/or your tutor will further explain content and you will be provided with opportunities to explore this content in a collaborative learning environment. After your weekly classes, you should continue to engage with unit resources to ensure you consolidate your understanding of unit content. Teaching team members will also be available for one-on-one consultations to assist you with your learning journey.
Feedback on Learning and Assessment
Students will receive feedback in various forms throughout the semester which may include:
- Informal: worked examples, such as verbal feedback in class, personal consultation
- Formal: in writing, such as checklists, rubrics, written commentary
- Direct: to individual students, either in written form or in consultation
- Indirect: to the whole class

Overview
The three assessments for this unit are opportunities for you to demonstrate your foundational understanding of, and skills and knowledge regarding the complex task of managing social media. The activities will demonstrate your ability to apply creative and critical thinking around social media techniques and tools; and the group task is an opportunity to devise and plan a social media strategy using a digital content calendar.
Modification to assessment may be required based on mode of study

Assessment Tasks
Assessment: Social Media Analysis
You will apply your knowledge of social media to analyse a client brief, identify your client's audience segments, undertake a competitor analysis and make recommendations to implement an effective social media strategy in response to your client's needs.
This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.
Assessment: Social Media Strategy
You will plan a Social Media Strategy for the unit’s prescribed client.
This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.
Assessment: Social Media Content
This task has 2 parts:
- Social Media Content (30%): You will create a minimum of five content pieces selected from, or inspired by, the Content Calendar developed as part of your Assessment 2.
- Social Media Competition (5%): You will attend and participate in an end-of-semester competition where you will be given a client brief and will come up with creative content ideas and examples for a real-life scenario.
The Social Media Content (30%) part of this assessment task is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.
