Overview
This foundational unit introduces you to a range of creative technologies and digital literacies that are fundamental to creative arts practice. You will engage in creative workshops with an emphasis on curiosity and openness, developing skills you will build on as you progress through your studies. You will also engage in a tutorial series that will consolidate your workshop experiences through critical discussion, debate and analysis that situate your experiences within broader theoretical concepts.
This unit emphasises creative risk tasking and experimentation to help you develop a speculative arts practice and encourages active and enquiring participation.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:
- Demonstrate an introductory understanding of some key concepts and approaches underpinning how creative technologies inform and innovate in creative practice.
- Produce and apply introductory knowledge of a range of creative technologies as experiments in a workshop setting.
- Identify and appraise the processes and outcomes undertaken within the workshop environment contextualised as a scholarly manner.
- Engage in an ethical and professional manner reflective of an inclusive learning environment.
Content
This foundational unit introduces you to a range of creative technologies and digital literacies that will inform your creative arts practice. The learning approach emphasises experimentation and encourages active and enquiring participation.
Learning Approaches
In this unit you will be provided with eContent and timetabled activities such as tutorials and workshops. eContent could include videos, readings, self-reflection and/or other activities designed to enhance your learning experience. During the timetabled activities, the content will be further explored by your unit coordinator and/or tutor. After your weekly classes, you should continue to engage with unit resources to ensure you consolidate your understanding of unit content. Teaching team members will also be available for one-on-one consultations to assist you with your learning journey.
Feedback on Learning and Assessment
Formative feedback on learning will be provided through in-class activities facilitated by your workshop leaders, as well as in peer-to-peer class discussion in workshops and tutorials. You will receive summative and formative feedback through your formal assessment tasks.

Assessment for this unit involves both formal and informal components, and group and individual work.
Assessment 1 is based on your engagement with a range of creative media and technological skill development activities and experimental practices. In Assessment 2, you will make use of these skills to develop a proposal for a creative work as a member of a interdisciplinary group. For Assessment 3, you will reflect on your learning experiences throughout the semester and contextualise them in terms of key technological concepts, creative approaches, and relevant literature.

Assessment: Creative Lab Activities
You will participate in weekly creative media and technological skill development activities and experimental practices.
The ethical and responsible use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools is authorised in this assessment. See the relevant assessment details in Canvas for specific guidelines.
Assessment: Creative work proposal
Working as a member of a collaborative team you will develop a proposal for a creative work that utilises creative technologies. The proposal will include an AV pitch by the group with each student speaking individually. You will also complete an individual reflection on your team-based experience which critically analyses the effectiveness of the team’s process and your own contribution.
This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.

Assessment: Creative Practice Portfolio
For this assessment you will analyse your creative development across the semester. You will do this through a curated digital portfolio using selected creative technology artefacts and written reflective analysis drawing on key concepts and creative approaches covered throughout the unit. Your submission will also include a critical commentary on your use of Gen AI in constructing your analysis.

Workshop and studio facilities, such as Z10 (KG campus), may be used for learning activities in this unit. Access to workshop facilities requires completion of a Workshops safety induction. Access to KG studio facilities (if utilised) requires completion of a KG studios induction. If you're required to use specific machinery you must also complete a Tier 3 CIESJ Health and Safety Induction. These inductions are completed online.
It is recommended that you also review the Tier 1 General safety induction for information about the safe use of buildings and facilities whilst on campus.
