Overview

Will people buy what you’re selling?  This unit will allow you to develop the skill and ability to test and validate whether there is actually a need for your business idea.  You will learn a number of approaches and methodologies that can be used to determine whether your idea is worth developing into a fully-fledged start-up.

You will be trained and given the opportunity to test a range of your assumptions, gather data and evidence from potential customers, to experiment with prototypes, and develop a minimum viable product. On completion this unit you will have developed a set of skills and knowledge of techniques that will allow you to determine the viability and potential of taking an idea into a business opportunity.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge and effective use of of validation techniques to test assumptions and/or hypotheses relating to a proposed new venture or initiative
  2. Demonstrate the capacity to critically evaluate and validate the value proposition, market opportunity and social benefit of a new venture idea
  3. Demonstrate the ability to revise your design concepts based on feedback and testing to optimise and improve usability, desirability and feasibility of your final design solution
  4. Demonstrate the ability to clearly articulate the validity and value of a proposed solution to an intended audience using digital and other communication mechanisms
  5. Use teamwork knowledge and skills in working with peers to communicate new value ideas to entrepreneurship peers and eco-system stakeholders

Learning Approaches

This unit takes a blended approach to learning and teaching. You will be provided with both eContent and timetabled activities such as workshops and tutorials. eContent will be clearly identified on your Canvas site for you to engage with on a weekly basis before your classes. eContent could include videos, readings, self-reflection and/or peer activities designed to enhance your learning experience. During the timetabled activities, the unit coordinator and/or your tutor will further explain content and you will be provided with opportunities to explore this content in a collaborative learning environment. After your weekly classes, you should continue to engage with unit resources to ensure you consolidate your understanding of unit content. Teaching team members will also be available for one-on-one consultations to assist you with your learning journey.

 

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

Students will receive feedback in various forms throughout the semester which may include:

  •  Informal: worked examples, such as verbal feedback in class, individual consultation
  •  Formal: in writing, such as checklists, rubrics, written commentary
  •  Direct: to individual students, either in written form or in consultation
  •  Indirect: to the whole class12

Overview

The assessment you undertake in this unit will allow you demonstrate the ability to validate a potential entrepreneurial venture using a range of tools and techniques considered to be essential components of the entrepreneurial toolkit.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment: Value Proposition Canvas

Is there a problem worth solving? Using the Value Proposition Canvas as a framework you are required to submit a video pitch identifying the pains, gains or tasks to be done that you proposed venture / initiative looks to address.  You will be required to explicitly outline the broader social and ethical considerations you made during the process.

This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.

Assessment: Validation Strategy

You are required to present and justify the approach you will take to validate the new venture idea or proposed initiative.  You will communicate this visually in poster format along with a written synopsis of your approach.

This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.

Assessment: Validation Activity Report

You will be required to document and critique the validation process undertaken by your group. You should explain the results found, being clear on the implications of your findings about the nature of the entrepreneurial opportunity moving forward and how the nature of your proposed offering changed as a result of the validation process. You should include a reflection on the efficacy of the approach that was undertaken in its ability to account for the social and ethical considerations reflected in the context and the nature of the new venture's approach to addressing the issue.

Academic Integrity
