Overview

This unit introduces creative industries disciplines, inter-disciplinarity and the careers of creative industries practitioners. It enhances your research, written communication and critical thinking skills for various professional and academic purposes. The unit draws upon cutting edge research into the distinctive characteristics of the Creative Industries and the creative workforce to introduce you to study and work as an emerging inter-disciplinary creative practitioner. 

 

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Research, investigate and analyse trends and emerging opportunities in creative sectors, disciplines, and occupations.
  2. Identify and characterise ways that creative practitioners add value to creative practice projects
  3. Locate, evaluate and synthesise information from a variety of sources into written communication

Content

This unit may include content such as:

  • Critical creative industries studies
  • Creative industries trends and transformations
  • Practical data collection, information retrieval, and analysis
  • Practical and academic written communication, visual and oral communication skills

Learning Approaches

This unit takes a blended approach to learning and teaching. You will be provided with both eContent and timetabled activities such as tutorials, workshops and practicals. eContent will be clearly identified on your Canvas site for you to engage with on a weekly basis before your classes. eContent could include videos, readings, self-reflection and/or peer activities designed to enhance your learning experience. During the timetabled activities, the unit coordinator and/or your tutor will further explain content and you will be provided with opportunities to explore this content in a collaborative learning environment. After your weekly classes, you should continue to engage with unit resources to ensure you consolidate your understanding of unit content. Teaching team members will also be available for one-on-one consultations to assist you with your learning journey.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

Students will receive feedback in various forms throughout the semester which may include:

  • Informal: worked examples, such as verbal feedback in class, personal consultation
  • Formal: in writing, such as checklists, rubrics, written commentary
  • Direct: to individual students, either in written form or in consultation
  • Indirect: to the whole class

Assessment Tasks

Assessment: Creative Industries Research and Analysis

There are two parts to the assessment; Discussion Posts (1.1), and an Essay (1.2)

You will research, analyse and report on creative industries sectors, disciplines and occupations of interest in terms of significance, future trends, career opportunities and challenges.

The essay component of this assessment item is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.

Assessment: Poster

You will design an academic poster that represents a thesis statement about a trend impacting the creative industries.

This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.

Academic Integrity
