Overview

Are you a creative? Can you learn to be innovative? The answer is yes (!)

Having the confidence and the capability to canvas a number of viable solutions to an issue or an opportunity that you may identify, is an essential pre-condition to pursuing a successful entrepreneurial venture.  This unit will help you to develop the capacity to explore, generate and develop creative approaches to situations you might experience in your professional and personal life. 

You will explore a range of approaches, techniques and tools that are designed to develop your creative self-efficacy including problem framing, ideation and creative problem solving.  In doing so you will learn to observe and evaluate situations in a novel and unique way, utilising a number of approaches to ensure that you have explored all of the possible options at your disposal. 

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Apply ideation, creative problem solving techniques, design thinking and analogical thinking principles to generate alternate solutions to any given scenario
  2. Evaluate creative problem solving tools and techniques to determine the most appropriate tools and techniques to be used in a given situation
  3. Understand a wide range of conceptual and practical issues that facilitate creativity and innovation.
  4. Use teamwork knowledge and skills in working with peers to communicate new value ideas to entrepreneurship eco-system stakeholders
  5. Communicate to a defined audience the nature of the creativity process and/or relevant recommendations or outcomes

Learning Approaches

This unit takes a blended approach to learning and teaching. You will be provided with both eContent and timetabled activities such as workshops and tutorials. eContent will be clearly identified on your Canvas site for you to engage with on a weekly basis before your classes. eContent could include videos, readings, self-reflection and/or peer activities designed to enhance your learning experience. During the timetabled activities, the unit coordinator and/or your tutor will further explain content and you will be provided with opportunities to explore this content in a collaborative learning environment. After your weekly classes, you should continue to engage with unit resources to ensure you consolidate your understanding of unit content. Teaching team members will also be available for one-on-one consultations to assist you with your learning journey.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

Students will receive feedback in various forms throughout the semester which may include:

  •  Informal: worked examples, such as verbal feedback in class, individual consultation
  •  Formal: in writing, such as checklists, rubrics, written commentary
  •  Direct: to individual students, either in written form or in consultation
  •  Indirect: to the whole class

Assessment

Overview

In this unit you will undertake a series of assessment items designed to assist you developing key skills and attributes relating to your creative and problem solving ability.  Working both in groups and individually you will undertake a number of different tasks designed to develop and build your creative self-efficacy.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment: "3 ideas in 8 weeks" - A reflection

In this assessment task you will be challenged to think of 3 different everyday problems to do with day-to-day items or situations of your choice. You will report on your problems/solutions explaining and demonstrating to your peers how you have used the creativity and innovation techniques learned in class to come up with your ideas. The feedback received will enable you to refine/improve your ideas and inform the final reflection/analysis submission. 

The late submission period does not apply and no assignment extensions are available.

Assessment: Problem Solving Workshop

A problem-solving workshop will be held where, as part of a team, you will address an ill-defined problem, which could benefit from applying ideation and creative problem solving approaches. You will present your framing, analysis, synthesis and re-framing of the issue as well as the solutions generated. You are encouraged to use creativity and out of the box thinking in design and delivery of solutions and group presentation.

The late submission period does not apply and no assignment extensions are available.

Assessment: Creative-Self Efficacy Reflection

You will be required to reflect critically on your own creativity and, with reference to the creativity and entrepreneurship literature, reflect on your learning journey through the unit and the development of your own sense of creative self-efficacy.

This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.

There are no out-of-the ordinary risks associated with this unit. You should, however, familiarise yourself with evacuation procedures operating in the buildings in which you attend classes and take the time to view the Emergency video.
