Overview
In this introductory business core unit, you will learn about how individuals and businesses allocate financial resources and use financial information to make sound business decisions in the contemporary workplace. You will gain foundational skills in managing your own personal finances, and in using software to gather and analyse financial information in order to manage cash, evaluate risk, and assess performance and value both at personal and organisational levels in authentic, real-world contexts. This unit, along with the rest of the introductory business core, forms the foundation for further study across the breadth of business disciplines and introduces you to business capabilities to prepare you for the future world of work and ignite your career.

This unit will introduce you to foundational knowledge of concepts, practices and contemporary issues of finance and accounting, including:
- personal financial risk and responsibilities;
- cash management and wealth creation;
- corporate financial valuations, reporting and responsibilities; and
- financial and non-financial evaluations of performance and corporate social responsibility.

In this unit, you will learn by engaging in problem- and case-based activities designed to introduce you to key financial knowledge and skills that are relevant to all business careers. You will explore contemporary financial issues and learn about foundational concepts and practices from the disciplines of finance, financial planning and accounting. In tutorials, you will develop key financial skills and literacies, applying them to authentic real-world scenarios. You will be expected to attend and contribute regularly to both workshops and tutorials, and work through content and self-directed formative learning activities presented on the unit Canvas site before and after class to supplement your learning.

Develop a personal financial plan (which may comprise creating a risk profile, cash budget, an assessment of borrowing capacity or plans for future wealth creation) and analyse the financial health of two listed firms using published financial statements.
This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.

Assessment: Valuation Pitch
Provide a valuation pitch to potential investors arguing for the financial merits of an investment in two listed firms. Number crunching, visualisation and storytelling will be key aspects of this assessment piece. You will communicate your recommendation via video. You will also need to provide peer feedback and complete a self-evaluation of the group component.

Provide a valuation pitch to potential investors arguing for the financial merits of an investment in two listed firms. Number crunching, visualisation and storytelling will be key aspects of this assessment piece. You will communicate your recommendation via video. You will also need to complete a self-evaluation of the group component.

Academic Integrity
