Study areas

Your QUT Bachelor of Urban Development (Honours) (Quantity Surveying and Cost Engineering) degree consists of 32 units (384 credit points) arranged as follows:

a) 6 Urban Development Core units (72 credit points), which includes a Work Integrated Learning unit that requires the completion of workplace learning;
b) 18 Quantity Surveying and Cost Engineering units (216 credit points); and
c) Complementary Studies (96 credit points) comprising of either a Second Major (an 8-unit set) or two Minors (two 4-unit sets).

Urban Development Core Units

Quantity Surveying and Cost Engineering Major Discipline Units

These units give you discipline level knowledge, skills and application competencies from introductory through intermediate, culminating with advanced graduate level units. They focus on developing your knowledge, practice and higher order thinking to an advanced level.

Quantity Surveying and Cost Engineering Honours Units

The following advanced level units (or their designated replacements) will provide the grade basis for GPA calculations that will determine the class of honours to be awarded: Research Project 1 (Part A and Part B); Research Methods; Construction Legislation; Risk Mangaement in the Resources Sector; Modern Construction Business; Cost Planning and Controls; Contract Administration.

Complementary Studies Options

Second Major: A choice of one second major from:

  • Urban Development disciplines: Urban and Regional Planning Studies, Property, Accountancy, or Applied Economics and Finance
  • Other disciplines: Architectural Studies

Minors: A choice of two minors from the lists below:

  • Urban Development disciplines: Urban and Regional Planning Studies, Property Development, Property Investment and Finance or Property Valuation
  • Other disciplines: Language Minors (University Wide Options) or University Wide Minors

Work integrated learning

You are required to undertake 30 days of approved quantity surveying and cost engineering work experience as part of your Professional Practice core unit. More information available from the Work Integrated Learning (WIL) placements website.

Professional recognition

Graduates are eligible for membership of the Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (AIQS), the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and Board of Quantity Surveyors Malaysia (BQSM).

Pathways to further study

The (UD01) Bachelor of Urban Development (Honours) is located at Level 8 of the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). Graduates may be eligible for discipline relevant Masters and/or Doctoral level programs

Entry to study the Bachelor of Urban Development (Honours) (Quantity Surveying and Cost Engineering) course is gained via the Bachelor of Urban Development (Honours) (Construction Management). To study the Bachelor of Urban Development (Honours) (Quantity Surveying and Cost Engineering):

Step 1.  Submit a change of major (CM) form (online).  You will be notified by email when this process is complete and your study plan has been changed.

Step 2.  When you have received notification that your major has been changed, ensure you enrol online (via HiQ e-student) in the correct discipline units before the census date

Study Area Description

In this second major you will develop accounting discipline knowledge, critical and analytical thinking, and problem-solving and communcation skills. Discipline units focus on financial and management accounting requirements, specialised applications in company accounting, audit and assurance, tax and company regulation. Key accounting concepts and knowledge, problem solving skills, and critical and analytical thinking are developed throughout the entire major as you learn about contemporary issues facing modern businesses.

Study Area Description

The Property second major is designed to provide Urban Development students with a broad exposure to the various property professions and the theory and practice supporting these professions.  It will build on the primary discipline knowledge of Construction Management, Quantity Surveying and Cost Engineering and Urban and Regional Planning to provide you with a broad knowledge that includes a 'real world' application of how these disciplines interact with the property industry and professions.  The study of this major will further emphasise the interdisciplinary nature of the built environment professions.
