Overview
SW05 Bachelor of Social Work (Honours) has a shared Year 1 and Year 2 with SW04 Bachelor of Social Work. After completing two years in the Bachelor of Social Work course, students with a GPA of 5 or over have the option to apply for a place in the Honours program. On entry to SW05, students retain all credit for units successfully completed in SW04 and will complete a further two years of full-time study which will include an honours research project, 1 Social Work elective and 1 research elective. Research topics and elective choices are selected in consultation with a member of academic staff who agrees to supervise the research. Students complete a significant research project during their final year of study. Grades in SWH coded units are used to calculate the level of honours. Students who achieve a first, or second-class level A honours are eligible to apply for entry to the PhD program.
Our BSW Honours Graduates are committed to social, political, environmental and cultural justice. As a graduate you will have acquired the advanced knowledge and expertise to become work ready researchers, advocates and activist leaders in real-world initiatives and work in partnership with individuals, communities and other professionals, whilst employing culturally safe practices for socially just society.
Course structures
Students in the Bachelor of Social Work (Honours) must complete 384 credit points comprised of:
(a) twenty-two Social Work core units (264 credit points)
(b) two professional placement units (72 credit points)
(c) one research project (24 credit points)
(d) two elective units comprising one social work elective unit and one research elective unit (24 credit points).
At the end of the second year of study in SW04 Bachelor of Social Work, students with a GPA of 5 or over will have the option to apply for SW05 Bachelor of Social Work (Honours). The Social Work course requires that students undertake two work-based placements of 500 hours each (total 1000 hours), in the third and fourth years of the four year program. These are undertaken across 2 x 36 credit point placement units with a semester of coursework separating the two placements. Students are not normally able to derive income from these placements.
