Overview

Employment opportunities for earth science graduates exist within a variety of government organisations and consulting companies with work ranging from field geologists to research scientists, environmental scientists, and hydrologists. Exploration/mine geologists and environmental scientists are employed by mining and hydrocarbon exploration companies who require graduates with skills that will allow them to undertake underground geological mapping, the evaluation of ore reserves, production control, or exploration for new mineral or oil and gas deposits, as well as the rehabilitation of mined lands. Graduates of the Earth Science Major will also have opportunities to work in government sectors and private consultancies in a range of Earth Science-related fields from environmental to exploration geology.

QUT You

You may be required to complete QUT You units in your course – find out more about QUT You.

Course Structures

To meet the course requirements of the Bachelor of Science Advanced (Honours), you must complete a total of 384 credit points.

For students commencing from 2024, the degree is arranged as follows:

  • Core units - 24 credit points
  • A Major – 240 credit points, which includes Advanced Research units (72 credit points)
  • QUT You - 24 credit points
  • Complementary studies - 96 credit points (see below)

For students who commenced the course prior to 2024, the degree is arranged as follows:

  • Core units - 48 credit points
  • A Major – 240 credit points
  • Complementary studies - 96 credit points

Earth science major students are also required to complete the following complementary studies components (minors) -

  • one minor (48cp) chosen from:
        - Applied Mathematics minor
        - Statistical Modelling minor
  • and one minor (48cp) chosen from:
       - Geology Extension minor
       - Advanced Science minor

Please note, students are expected to have a minimum GPA of 5.5 prior to entry to Honours level units in year 4. Students who do not meet this requirement will liaise with the Course Coordinator to discuss strategies for completion.

Earth Science is critical for Australia's future sustainable development as our natural resources are a major building block of the nation's economy. Geoscientists play a leading role in finding, developing and managing these resources, as well as studying climate change and managing environmental issues, such as chronic water shortage, dry land salinity and coastal development.

An understanding of Planet Earth is fundamental to your career as a Scientist. Earth Science provides us with an understanding of Earth materials, the natural processes acting in and upon our planet, and its history. You will gain advanced skills needed to become a professional Earth Scientist with special emphasis on hands-on skills acquired through laboratory work and field studies for both resource exploration and management and environmental applications. The program provides you with particular strengths in the areas of sedimentary geology, structural geology, igneous processes and geology, hydrogeology, marine geology, and environmental geology - all these subject areas are of particular importance to Queensland and key industrial sectors that underpin our economy. The Earth Science major in the Bachelor of Science Advanced (Honours) will qualify you with an advanced and coherent knowledge in Earth Science.
