Overview
Physicists are involved in finding solutions to many current and future challenges facing our world. These include developing instruments for environmental monitoring, computer models for climate change prediction, and developing solar and renewable energy systems. Physicists are also attempting to address the world's ever-increasing appetite for information and information processing by undertaking research into quantum computers, nanotechnology, lasers, and photonics.
Physics deals with the natural laws and processes, and the states and properties of matter, energy, space and time. Physics also underlies many of the recent advances in information technology, medicine, and biotechnology. Areas of specialisation include mechanics, electromagnetism, lasers and optics, medical physics, computational physics, nuclear and radiation physics, astronomy and astrophysics, thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, and relativity.
The Physics major will provide students with a solid theoretical and practical grounding in physics and equip them with advanced research techniques and skills which will be attractive to employers and enable students to continue to postgraduate studies if they desire.
The Physics major in the Bachelor of Science Advanced (Honours) will qualify students with an advanced and coherent knowledge of physics. Students will commence the Major in Year 1, Semester 1, by undertaking two units which introduce and conceptualize concepts in physics, and develop skills in experimental physics. From Year 1, Semester 2, the analytic skills required of a physicist - including mathematical skills and research techniques - will be developed more intensely, with units focused on mathematical methods and research techniques.
QUT You
You may be required to complete QUT You units in your course – find out more about QUT You.
Course Structures
To meet the course requirements of the Bachelor of Science Advanced (Honours), you must complete a total of 384 credit points.
For students commencing from 2024, the degree is arranged as follows:
- Core units - 24 credit points
- A Major – 240 credit points, which includes Advanced Research units (72 credit points)
- QUT You - 24 credit points
- Complementary studies - 96 credit points (see below)
Enrolment Information: PVB306 Solid State Physics & Quantum Statistics and PVB307 Physics in Practice
For Physics Major students that have PVB306 and PVB307 on their study plan – these units are 6 credit points (cp) each and are designed to be taken together in the same teaching period. Collectively, they have the workload of a single 12 credit point unit. Timetabled activities for both units will be distributed across the semester, with lectures and tutorials scheduled in alternate weeks, and laboratory activities held during selected weeks. Taking PVB306 (6cp) and PVB307 (6cp) with 3 other 12cp units in the same semester will still equate to the standard full-time study load of 48cp.
For students who commenced the course prior to 2024, the degree is arranged as follows:
- Core units - 48 credit points
- A Major – 240 credit points
- Complementary studies - 96 credit points
Physics major students are also required to complete the following complementary studies components (minors) -
- Mathematics for Physics minor (48cp)
- and one minor (48cp) chosen from:
- Astrophysics minor
- Nanotechnology minor (discontinued 31/12/2024)
- Advanced Science minor
Please note, students are expected to have a minimum GPA of 5.5 prior to entry to Honours level units in year 4. Students who do not meet this requirement will liaise with the Course Coordinator to discuss strategies for completion.

Nanotechnology Minor - ST01MNR-NANOTEC
Study Area Description
The Nanotechnology minor is designed for physics, chemistry, mechanical engineering and process engineering students with an interest in nanoscience and its applications in nanotechnology. Since nanotechnology is a multi-disciplinary field of research, this minor offers two units dedicated to broadening and/or deepening your skills in physics, engineering and chemistry. You will also undertake two units specifically focused on nanotechnology: one unit that will focus on the foundations of the characterisation and fabrication of nano-structured materials, and one research based unit where you will have the opportunity to advance your theoretical knowledge and to pursue research projects in nanotechnology.
