Overview
Biology graduates work in a wide range of jobs throughout the public and private sectors, and in a range of environments including offices, laboratories, farms, fields, factories, cities, and forests.
Laboratory-based careers may include laboratory management, basic research, forensic microbiology, or molecular genetics. Farm and field-based work could entail animal management, plant breeding, entomology, marine biology, or pest and disease management. Industrial work might involve biotechnology to produce food, fuel, or pharmaceuticals. Other careers could involve science writing, teaching, policy development, or the commercialisation and management of biological products and processes.
Professional recognition
Professional recognition can be achieved through membership of an appropriate scientific society, such as the Australian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the Ecological Society of Australia, the Australian Society of Plant Scientists, the Australian Society of Microbiology and many more.
Pathways to further study
The QUT Bachelor of Science is located at Level 7 of the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). Eligible graduates may continue their studies with an additional honours year in ST10 Bachelor of Science (Honours).
Study costs
Domestic students may need to pay the Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF).
QUT You
You may be required to complete QUT You units in your course – find out more about QUT You.
Course Structures
To meet the course requirements of the Bachelor of Science, you must complete a total of 288 credit points.
For students commencing from 2024, the degree is arranged as follows:
- Core units - 60 credit points
- A Major – 120 credit points
- QUT You - 24 credit points
- Complementary studies - 84 credit points, made up of:
- a second major (84 credit points), or
- a minor (48 credit points) and elective units (36 credit points).
For students who commenced the course prior to 2024, the degree is arranged as follows:
- Core units - 60 credit points
- A Major – 132 credit points
- Complementary studies - 96 credit points, made up of:
- a second major (96 credit points), or
- two minors (48 credit points each).
To complement your studies, you might choose a Second Major or one of our discipline-specific minors such as Biotechnology and Genetics or Wildlife Ecology. You can also select a Minor from another Science discipline, or University-wide Minor, or study a foreign language.

Unit selection guide
If you have this unit option on your study plan, you have a choice between these units. Here is the guidance on which of the units to select -
- if you intend to undertake the Biological Sciences or Environmental Science major or Chemistry major, MZB104 is recommended for these majors
- if you intend to undertake the Physics major, MZB105 is recommended for this major
- if you intend to undertake the Climate Science or Earth Science major, you can choose either unit, but be sure to consider your 2nd major in this decision.
For students that have completed MXB100 or MZB125, or have MXB100 core to their primary major e.g. Chemistry, will need to select MZB104
SCB300 Professional Practice
For Work Integrated Learning (WIL) opportunities, SCB300 Professional Practice unit is available for selection. Save an elective to ensure study plan scope (SCB300 is available for selection in the complementary studies - unit options; and in the core unit option space (for student who commenced the course prior to 2024)). Please refer to the Faculty of Science – Student Information: Work Placement Canvas page for further information and pre-enrolment requirements.

You can access details about University Wide Minor options from: https://www.student.qut.edu.au/enrolment/units/university-wide-second-majors-and-minors
Please note that students should allow a minimum of 3 semesters to complete a minor to account for semesters of offering and any pre-requisite requirements.
Important Enrolment Information:
- Any unit(s) that appear in a minor and are also mandatory elsewhere in your course can not contribute towards the completion of the minor.
- Any unit(s) that appear in multiple minors can only contribute towards the completion of one minor.
- Not all minors may be available in your course. Please check your course rules.
- Some units have been recoded, renamed or discontinued. These changes have been reflected in the lists of units available to continuing students.
