Overview

Biology graduates work in a wide range of jobs throughout the public and private sectors, and in a range of environments including offices, laboratories, farms, fields, factories, cities, and forests.

Laboratory-based careers may include laboratory management, basic research, forensic microbiology, or molecular genetics. Farm and field-based work could entail animal management, plant breeding, entomology, marine biology, or pest and disease management. Industrial work might involve biotechnology to produce food, fuel, or pharmaceuticals. Other careers could involve science writing, teaching, policy development, or the commercialisation and management of biological products and processes.

Professional recognition

Professional recognition can be achieved through membership of an appropriate scientific society, such as the Australian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the Ecological Society of Australia, the Australian Society of Plant Scientists, the Australian Society of Microbiology and many more.

Pathways to further study

The QUT Bachelor of Science is located at Level 7 of the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). Eligible graduates may continue their studies with an additional honours year in ST10 Bachelor of Science (Honours).

Study costs

Domestic students may need to pay the Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF).

QUT You

You may be required to complete QUT You units in your course – find out more about QUT You.

Enrolment information

MZB104 Quantitative Methods / MZB105 Introduction to Calculus

Unit selection guide
If you have this unit option on your study plan, you have a choice between these units. Here is the guidance on which of the units to select -

  • if you intend to undertake the Biological Sciences or Environmental Science major or Chemistry major, MZB104 is recommended for these majors
  • if you intend to undertake the Physics major, MZB105 is recommended for this major
  • if you intend to undertake the Climate Science or Earth Science major, you can choose either unit, but be sure to consider your 2nd major in this decision.

For students that have completed MXB100 or MZB125, or have MXB100 core to their primary major e.g. Chemistry, will need to select MZB104

SCB300 Professional Practice

For Work Integrated Learning (WIL) opportunities, SCB300 Professional Practice unit is available for selection. Save an elective to ensure study plan scope (SCB300 is available for selection in the complementary studies - unit options; and in the core unit option space (for student who commenced the course prior to 2024)). Please refer to the Faculty of Science – Student Information: Work Placement Canvas page for further information and pre-enrolment requirements.

Study Area Description

In the modern world, computation and simulation are as much an indispensible part of scientific progresss and discovery as are theory and experiment. Therefore a solid foundation in computational and simulation science is an essential skill for students studying across the STEM fields.

Computational and simulation science combines the study of mathematical models with the use of computation to provide quantitative analysis and visualisation in order to gain insight to the solution of scientific and engineering problems from a range of application areas.

This second major provides students with a customised program that suplements their degree with complementary essential knowledge in the use of modelling, computation, simulation and visualisation, applicable across the fields of science and engineering.

Study Area Description

The second major will qualify students with a broad and coherent knowledge in the field of public health. The graduate will achieve a good understanding of the philosophy and approach of public health, and the multidisciplinary nature of public health. The graduate will also achieve fundamental knowledge in the structure and function of the body, body systems and the mechanisms of disease; the importance of achieving environments that are able to sustain human health; the patterns of health inequalities in current Australian society and the contributions of sociology and anthropology to public health practice; public health policy development and the translation of health policy into professional practice; the study of the distribution of health and disease in the population; and the range of health promotion strategies available to practitioners working in health-related fields. The Public Health second major also covers the qualitative methods used in Public Health that complement the quantitative methods graduates will be learning in their first major.

Study Area Description

As an applied science, ecology is used to design strategies for the management of wildlife populations and commercially important plant and animal species. The Wildlife Ecology minor will allow you to gain the broad range of scientific skills and specialist techniques required for understanding biodiversity, conserving and managing endangered animals, controlling pests and invasive species in natural and agricultural ecosystems, managing exploited populations and evaluating issues associated with the management of our natural resources. The minor is an extension minor for the Biology and Environmental Science majors. It will prepare you for further study, and equip you with the skills needed for employment in areas where ecological theory and practice is used to examine biological and environmental questions.

Climate change is the foremost critical challenge to the sustainability and habitability of the Earth as we know it. There is rapidly growing demand for expertise in the science that governs climate and informs models of climate change - across the private sector, within many Australian government organisations, and in research institutions. This minor delivers a strong understanding of climate science and combines it with relevant knowledge about ocean-atmosphere interaction, insight into global change, sustainability and air quality and climate change mitigation measures. This combination is ideally suited to equip you with diverse backgrounds and primary interests to tackle the mounting challenges in areas such as sea level change mitigation, local climate adaptation, sustainable resource management and coastal ocean climate mitigation.

Physics Minor - ST01MNR-PHYSICS
Study Area Description

Physicists are involved in finding solutions to many current and future challenges facing our world. These include developing instruments for environmental monitoring, computer models for climate change prediction, and developing solar and renewable energy systems. Physicists are also attempting to address the world's ever-increasing appetite for information and information processing by undertaking research into quantum computers, nanotechnology, lasers and photonics. A minor in physics provides a broad and coherent introduction to the discipline.

The following study areas have been discontinued or its version has been discontinued. Students who have already commenced one of these minors will be permitted to complete it.

Study Area Description

This minor will equip students with a broad range of skills which industry requires in the Chemistry & Chemical Engineering fields. Through exposure to theory, practice and actual industrial site visits, the graduate will gain a deep appreciation of the relationship between chemical principles and the steps required to solve practical problems in their professional careers. The Industrial Chemistry minor includes a strong focus on bridging the gap between chemists and engineers which is an identified weakness for graduates from other institutions. The fact that we concomitantly expose graduates to scientific and business concepts is highly attractive to employers of Chemists in Queensland and worldwide. In addition, the coverage of cutting edge concepts and real world problems provides excellent opportunities to undertake research, prepare high-achieving graduates for post-graduate study and a research career.

Nanotechnology Minor - ST01MNR-NANOTEC
Study Area Description

The Nanotechnology minor is designed for physics, chemistry, mechanical engineering and process engineering students with an interest in nanoscience and its applications in nanotechnology. Since nanotechnology is a multi-disciplinary field of research, this minor offers two units dedicated to broadening and/or deepening your skills in physics, engineering and chemistry. You will also undertake two units specifically focused on nanotechnology: one unit that will focus on the foundations of the characterisation and fabrication of nano-structured materials, and one research based unit where you will have the opportunity to advance your theoretical knowledge and to pursue research projects in nanotechnology.
