Career outcomes
Depending on your specialisation, you may find employment as a games programmer, games designer, simulation developer or designer, animator, film and television special effects developer, games reviewer, video game tester, sound designer, or mobile and communications developer. In addition, your strong design and programming skills can open up jobs such as web developer, digital product strategist, multimedia designer, software developer or technical officer.
Graduates of the Bachelor of Science are skilled in many aspects of scientific study including: Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Earth Science, Environmental Science and Physics. See ST01 Bachelor of Science Study Areas for details of career outcome for each discipline areas. Careers might also include science writing, teaching, policy development, or commercialisation and management of biological products and processes.
Professional recognition
Students may be eligible for a membership to a number of professional bodies depending on choice of major and unit selection.
Pathways to further study
The QUT Bachelor of Science and the Bachelor of Games and Interactive Environments are located at Level 7 of the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). As a Bachelor Degree, this can lead to an Honours program for students with sufficient GPA result. For instance, an honours degree in ST10 Bachelor of Science (Honours). Please contact the Course Coordinators for further information.
Study costs
Domestic students may need to pay the Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF).
QUT You
You may be required to complete QUT You units in your course – find out more about QUT You.
Course Structures
Students are required to complete a total of 384 credit points.
For students commencing from 2024, the degree is arranged as follows:
Science component
- Science core units – 60 credit points
- Science major units – 120 credit points from one of the specified majors: Biological Sciences; Chemistry; Climate Science; Earth Science; Environmental Science; or Physics
Games and Interactive Environments component
- Games and interactive environments core units – 108 credit points
- Games and interactive environments major units – 72 credit points from one of the specified majors: Animations; Game Design; or Software Technologies
QUT You – 24 credit points.
Science component: MZB104 Quantitative Methods / MZB105 Introduction to Calculus
Unit selection guide
You have a choice between these two units. Here is a guidance on which of the units to select -
- if you intend to undertake the Biological Sciences or Environmental Science major or Chemistry major, MZB104 is recommended for these majors
- if you intend to undertake the Physics major, MZB105 is recommended for this major
- if you intend to undertake the Climate Science or Earth Science major, you can choose either unit.
For students that have completed MXB100 or MZB125, or have MXB100 core to their primary major e.g. Chemistry, will need to select MZB104.
For students who commenced the course prior to 2024, the degree is arranged as follows:
Science component
- Science core units - 60 credit points
- Science major units - 132 credit points from one of the specified majors: Biological Sciences; Chemistry; Earth Science; Environmental Science; or Physics
Games and Interactive Environments component
- Games and interactive environments core units – 72 credit points
- Games and interactive environments major units – 120 credit points from one of the specified majors: Animations; Game Design; or Software Technologies
