Career outcomes
This double degree offers you a wide range of career opportunities.
Graduates can work as professional engineers in a variety of discipline areas. Depending on your area of engineering specialisation, you could work with construction companies, environmental specialists, computer manufacturers, communications and digital signal processing products manufacturers, cable and network equipment manufacturers, defence agencies, electricity utilities, the mining industry, telecommunications companies, automated systems and robotics, the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, or the power generation and supply industry.
Graduates of the Bachelor of Science are skilled in many aspects of scientific study including: biological sciences, chemistry, earth science, environmental science and physics. Careers might include science writing, teaching, policy development, or the commercialisation and management of biological products and processes.
Professional recognition
All graduates are eligible for an Engineers Australia (EA) membership. EA is a signatory to the Washington Accord, which permits graduates to work in various countries across the world. This course is recognised internationally in the engineering profession, giving QUT graduates more career opportunities overseas.
Work integrated learning
Work Integrated Learning (WIL) is embedded in the curriculum, and is a core component for all engineering students.
WIL allows you to graduate with a portfolio of professional skills that provides evidence of your professional competencies. As part of the course requirements, you need to undertake 60 days of approved work experience in an engineering environment under the supervision of a Professional Engineer. Please start planning your WIL in your third year of studies. After achieving 288 credit points in your double degree, you are eligible for an engineering related placement. For questions or assistance, please contact the Faculty of Engineering WIL team at engineering.wil@qut.edu.au.
Study costs
Domestic students may need to pay the Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF).
QUT You
QUT You provides interdisciplinary experiences that enhance critical and creative thinking, self-awareness, and digital skills, preparing students to create positive societal change.
You are required to complete QUT You units in your course – find out more about QUT You.
Course information
Course updates and changes to units and study areas may affect enrolment requirements. If your study plan is affected, it will be updated accordingly. For related questions or assistance related to your engineering degree, please contact the Faculty of Engineering at engineering@qut.edu.au or the Faculty of Science science@qut.edu.au for questions about your science degree.
To complete your degree within the standard timeframe (5 years for full-time), it is recommended to follow the provided study plan as not all units are offered every semester. This will ensure that you satisfy all prerequisites where applicable.
Course Structures
Students are required to complete a total of 480 credit points.
Science component
The Bachelor of Science component consists of the following:
For students commencing from 2024, you must complete 180 credit points comprising of 60 credit points of Science core units. 48 credit points of Science core units from the Science degree will also contribute to the Engineering degree1. You will also take 120 credit points of Science major units selected from one of the specified majors:
- Biological Sciences; Chemistry; Climate Science; Earth Science; Environmental Science; or Physics
And QUT You – 12 credit points
Science component: MZB104 Quantitative Methods / MZB105 Introduction to Calculus
Unit selection guide
You have a choice between these two units. Here is a guidance on which of the units to select -
- if you intend to undertake the Biological Sciences or Environmental Science major or Chemistry major, MZB104 is recommended for these majors
- if you intend to undertake the Physics major, MZB105 is recommended for this major. For SE80 students completing MZB125 in their Engineering component, will need to select MZB104 in their Science component.
- if you intend to undertake the Climate Science or Earth Science major, you can choose either unit.
For students that have completed MXB100 first or have MXB100 core to their primary major, will need to select MZB104.
Science component: PVB306 Solid State Physics & Quantum Statistics and PVB307 Physics in Practice
For Physics Major students that have PVB306 and PVB307 on their study plan – these units are 6 credit points (cp) each and are designed to be taken together in the same teaching period. Collectively, they have the workload of a single 12 credit point unit. Timetabled activities for both units will be distributed across the semester, with lectures and tutorials scheduled in alternate weeks, and laboratory activities held during selected weeks. Taking PVB306 (6cp) and PVB307 (6cp) with 3 other 12cp units in the same semester will still equate to the standard full-time study load of 48cp.
For students who commenced the course prior to 2024, you must complete 192 credit points which comprised of 60 credit points and 132 credit points of Science major units selected from one of the specified majors:
- Biological Sciences; Chemistry; Earth Science; Environmental Science; or Physics
Engineering (Honours) component
The Engineering (Honours) component consists of the following:
- Eight (8) Engineering Core units (totalling 96 credit points), including a Research Methods unit (12 credit points) and 2 Research Project units (24 credit points); and
- Sixteen (16) units in one discipline/major (192 credit points)
- Four (4) engineering aligned units (48cps), contributing to the achievement of the Engineers Australia Stage 1 Competency Standard for Professional Engineer, which also contribute to the Science degree.1
- One unit for the Work Placement Experience Report (0 credit points, no fee unit), mandatory for course completion
1 Four (4) units contribute to both the engineering degree (to align to Engineers Australia Stage 1 Competency for Professional Engineer) and the Science degree.
