Career outcomes
This double degree offers you a wide range of career opportunities.
Graduates can work as professional engineers in a variety of discipline areas. Depending on your area of engineering specialisation, you could work with construction companies, environmental specialists, computer manufacturers, communications and digital signal processing products manufacturers, cable and network equipment manufacturers, defence agencies, electricity utilities, mining industry, telecommunications companies, automated systems and robotics, the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, or in power generation and supply.
Mathematics graduates are employed across a wide range of areas. These include, but are not limited to, finance, investment, data analytics, defence and national security, research, information technology, engineering modelling and simulation, environmental science, health, management, marketing, logistics, media, and education. In addition to their knowledge and skills in mathematics, graduates are also highly valued for their analytical and problem-solving skills. Development of skills in communication, problem-solving, critical thinking, and teamwork form an integral part of the course.
Work integrated learning
Work Integrated Learning (WIL) is embedded in the curriculum, and is a core component for all engineering students.
WIL allows you to graduate with a portfolio of professional skills that provides evidence of your professional competencies. As part of the course requirements, you need to undertake 60 days of approved work experience in an engineering environment under the supervision of a Professional Engineer. Please start planning your WIL in your third year of studies. After achieving 288 credit points in your double degree, you are eligible for an engineering related placement. For questions or assistance, please contact the Faculty of Engineering WIL team at engineering.wil@qut.edu.au.
Professional recognition
All graduates are eligible for an Engineers Australia (EA) membership. EA is a signatory to the Washington Accord, which permits graduates to work in various countries across the world. This course is recognised internationally in the engineering profession, giving QUT graduates more career opportunities overseas.
Graduates of each mathematics major are eligible for full or associate membership of a number of discipline-based professional associations.
QUT You
QUT You provides interdisciplinary experiences that enhance critical and creative thinking, self-awareness, and digital skills, preparing students to create positive societal change.
You are required to complete QUT You units in your course – find out more about QUT You.
Course information
Course updates and changes to units and study areas may affect enrolment requirements. If your study plan is affected, it will be updated accordingly. For related questions or assistance related to your engineering degree, please contact the Faculty of Engineering: engineering@qut.edu.au or the Faculty of Science science@qut.edu.au for questions about your mathematics degree.
To complete your double degree within the standard timeframe (5 years for full-time), it is recommended to follow the provided study plan as not all units are offered every semester. This will ensure that you satisfy all prerequisites where applicable.
Study costs
Domestic students may need to pay the Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF).
Course Structures
Students are required to complete 480 credit points as outlined below. You will study engineering and maths units in your first four years and for the remainder of this course you will concentrate on engineering studies.
Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)
The Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) consists of
- Seven (7) core engineering units (84 cp) including four units in first year (48cp) +research methods and project (36 cp)
- Seventeen (17) units in one discipline/major (204 cps)
- Four (4) engineering aligned units (48 cps) from the Bachelor of Mathematics component. These units contribute both to the achievement of the Engineers Australia Stage 1 Competency Standard for Professional Engineer and to core units of the Bachelor of Mathematics (see below). These units are MXB105, MXB106, MXB103, MXB107.
- One unit for the Work Placement Experience Report (0 credit points, no fee unit), mandatory for course completion
Bachelor of Mathematics
The Bachelor of Mathematics component consists of
a) Seven (7) Core units (totalling 84 credit points), four (4) of which also contribute to the engineering degree (see above).
b) Eight (8) Major units (totalling 96 credit points), which may be selected from one of the following study areas:
