Work integrated learning
Depending on choice of major in the Bachelor of Science, field work and/or work-integrated learning may form a component of your study. More information available from the Work Integrated Learning (WIL) placements website.
Career outcomes
Studying a double degree in science and mathematics will provide you with advanced knowledge and skills that are highly sought after by employers.
Science graduates may find work in a diverse range of exciting fields. These include, but are not limited to, natural resources, agriculture, genetics, chemistry and biochemistry, infection and disease control, bioinformatics, and physical measuring and imaging techniques.
Mathematics graduates are also employed across a wide range of areas. These include, but are not limited to, finance, investment, data analytics, defence and national security, research, information technology, environmental science, health, management, marketing, logistics, media, and education. In addition to their knowledge and skills in mathematics, graduates are also highly valued for their analytical and problem-solving skills. Development of skills in communication, problem-solving, critical thinking, and teamwork form an integral part of the course.
Professional recognition
Graduates will satisfy the requirements for membership in the relevant professional body for their chosen science major. Graduates of the Bachelor of Mathematics degree may be eligible for membership of the Mathematical Society of Australia, the Statistical Society of Australia, and the Australian Society of Operations Research.
Pathways to further study
The QUT Bachelor of Science (Study Area A) and the Bachelor of Mathematics (Study Area A) are located at Level 7 of the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). Eligible graduates may continue their studies in these disciplines with an honours degree in ST10 Bachelor of Science (Honours) or MS10 Bachelor of Mathematics (Honours).
Study costs
Domestic students may need to pay the Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF).
QUT You
You may be required to complete QUT You units in your course – find out more about QUT You.
Course Structures
Students are required to complete a total of 384 credit points.
For students commencing from 2024, the degree is arranged as follows:
Science component
- Science core units – 60 credit points
- Science major units – 120 credit points from one of the specified majors: Biological Sciences; Chemistry; Climate Science; Earth Science; Environmental Science; or Physics
Mathematics component
- Mathematics core units – 84 credit points
- Mathematics major units – 96 credit points from one of the specified majors: Applied and Computational Mathematics; Operations Research; or Statistics
QUT You – 24 credit points
Science component: MZB104 Quantitative Methods / MZB105 Introduction to Calculus
Unit selection guide
You have a choice between these two units. Here is a guidance on which of the units to select -
- if you intend to undertake the Biological Sciences or Environmental Science major or Chemistry major, MZB104 is recommended for these majors
- if you intend to undertake the Physics major, MZB105 is recommended for this major
- if you intend to undertake the Climate Science or Earth Science major, you can choose either unit.
For students that have completed MXB100 or MZB125, or have MXB100 core to their primary major, will need to select MZB104.
Science component: PVB306 Solid State Physics & Quantum Statistics and PVB307 Physics in Practice
For Physics Major students that have PVB306 and PVB307 on their study plan – these units are 6 credit points (cp) each and are designed to be taken together in the same teaching period. Collectively, they have the workload of a single 12 credit point unit. Timetabled activities for both units will be distributed across the semester, with lectures and tutorials scheduled in alternate weeks, and laboratory activities held during selected weeks. Taking PVB306 (6cp) and PVB307 (6cp) with 3 other 12cp units in the same semester will still equate to the standard full-time study load of 48cp.
For students who commenced the course prior to 2024, the degree is arranged as follows:
Science component
- Science core units - 60 credit points
- Science major units - 132 credit points from one of the specified majors: Biological Sciences; Chemistry; Earth Science; Environmental Science; or Physics
Mathematics component
- Mathematics core units - 96 credit points
- Mathematics major units - 96 credit points from one of the specified majors: Applied and Computational Mathematics; Operations Research; or Statistics
