Master of Teaching (Secondary) component: Internal full-time; Internal part-time; online full-time; online part-time.
Advanced standing (credit)
You may wish to apply for advanced standing (also known as credit or exemption) for prior completed studies and other assessable learning outcomes. See more on Advanced Standing.
Advanced standing will not be awarded for EUN263 Professional Experience: Quality Teaching Performance Assessment.
This is a capstone unit that requires key experiences including student portfolio, career preparation, reflection, closure and research. This unit is designed to measure your knowledge, skills and ability in relation to the Graduate level of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APSTs) and must be completed by all students.
Blue card
You will need to apply for a blue card because you will be working with children or young people as part of Master of Teaching (Secondary) course. More information is available from the Blue card website.
Professional experience
In the Master of Teaching (Secondary) you will complete a minimum of 60 days of professional experience in school classrooms.
You should have a course GPA of 4 or higher to undertake a professional experience. You are required to have a course GPA of 5 or higher to undertake a rural, remote or international professional experience.
The majority of supervised professional experience must occur in Australian secondary school settings.
The final professional experience unit must be completed in the last semester of enrolment in the course. For more information about your professional experience, please visit the Professional Experience website. You can look at the professional experience dates on the Professional Experience Calendar.
Designated units
This course contains designated units which are essential to your course progress and, if you do not successfully complete the requirements of these units, your progress in the course will be reviewed. Please refer to the unit outlines and/or the HiQ website for more information.
Literacy and numeracy
You are required to achieve the benchmarks on the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students (LANTITE) to satisfy course completion requirements. Successfully achieving the literacy and numeracy benchmark is a requirement to graduate from the course.
You are expected to attempt the Test in your first year of enrolment. Sanctions will apply if you don't sit the test in the timeframe explained on the LANTITE Canvas site.
From 2024, the Australian Institute of Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) permits recognition of First Nations language proficiency by the relevant cultural authority as an acceptable alternative standard to LANTITE. Students who are proficient in an Australian First Nations language can use this as an alternative in place of all LANTITE requirements. Further information can found on the LANTITE Canvas site.
If you are experiencing issues or have concerns, please contact the Faculty at ciesj.support@qut.edu.au.
Professional recognition
This course meets professional teaching standards for the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership and Queensland College of Teachers. Graduates are eligible to apply for teacher registration.
Applicants seeking teacher registration in Australia may be required to provide evidence of English Language proficiency levels. Further information is available from relevant registering bodies.
Early exit
If you are unable to complete EU50 Master of Teaching (Secondary), you can exit with EU20 Graduate Diploma in Educational Studies (96 credit points) on meeting specific criteria.
There is no direct entry to the Graduate Diploma in Educational Studies and this course does not provide eligibility for teacher registration. For further information contact your Course Coordinator.
If you are unable to complete EU50 Master of Teaching (Secondary), or decide that you wish to concentrate on your studies in mathematics only, you can also consider transferring to MS01 Bachelor of Mathematics.
