Scholarships
Course information
The Bachelor of Justice equips graduates for a wide variety of employment in the criminal justice, government (state and federal), law enforcement and policing and intelligence fields. Past graduates have developed successful careers in the State or Federal police services, have created social and justice policies for governments, contributed to the work of advocacy centres (eg. women, youth and children's advocacy). They have also become criminologists, have advanced into Defence, Customs and the Australian Crime Commission. Other popular career choices include corrections, human rights and anti-discrimination areas. Students are prepared for the workplace, by exploring the most recent theory and practice of social justice and including relevant general skills like problem-solving, analytical ability and applied computer skills that are relevant to the workplace.
Advanced standing (credit)
Students who have previously completed higher education studies may be entitled up to 96 credit points of advanced standing. Prospective students should check the Advanced Standing Precedent List. More information available from the Credit for prior learning page.
Study areas
Study Area: Criminology and Policing
The Criminology and Policing major will ensure that students acquire the skills and competencies to meet government requirements for methodological knowledge and skill sets relevant to the justice sector professional workforce.
Areas of study include:
Theories of Crime, Policing in Context, Crime Research Methods, Punishment and Penal Policy, Statistical Methods, Criminal Law in Context, Crimes of Violence, Sex and Crime, Policing Diversity,Youth Justice, Gender Crime and the Criminal Justice System, Eco Crime, Death Investigation, Drugs and Crime, Independent Study, Statistical Methods and Professional Placement.
Study Area: Policy and Politics*
The Policy and Politics major will cover material designed to match the selection criteria for entry level policy and political positions in government.
Areas of study include: Theories of Government, Crime Research Methods, Power Government and Justice, Justice Institutions, Political Practice, Official Corruption, Professional Placement, Independent Study and Critical Policy Analysis. This major is a multi-disciplinary field. The Policy and Governance major aims to provide students with a depth of contextual knowledge and vocational skills for entry level (AO3-5 on Queensland public sector scale) positions in policy. These skills will also target the political market including ministerial staff, staff or political parties and non-government organisations (NGOs).
*Policy and Politics is the new major from 2021 on, replacing Policy and Governance

Course Structures
2026 commencing students
In order to complete this course, you must complete a total of 288 credit points made up of:
- Justice core units: 72 credit points
- Justice capstone units: 24 credit points comprising one core unit (12 credit points) and a Justice capstone unit option (12 credit points)
- A Justice major: 72 credit points from one of the following disciplines:
- Criminology and Violence Prevention
- Investigations and Intelligence
- Policy, Politics and Social Reform
- QUT You: 24 credit points
- Complementary studies: 96 credit points made up of:
- Justice First Year unit options - 24 credit points, PLUS
- one 72 credit point second major# (Justice or uniwide); OR
- one Justice minor# and 24 credit points chosen from uniwide unit options (electives); OR
- one uniwide minor* and 24 credit points chosen from Justice unit options (electives); OR
- 72 credit points chosen from unit options (electives). 24 credit points must be chosen from Justice unit options.
#Students may only select a second major or minor different to their primary major or study area A.
*Preferred minors include Forensic Science and Management, however, students can choose any university wide minors.
2025 commencing students
The Bachelor of Justice requires a total of 288 credit points made up of core, major, complementary studies and QUT You.
Justice core units: 7 x 12 credit point units = 84 cp
Study Area A: 8 x 12 credit point units = 96 cp
Select either Criminology and Policing or Policy and Politics major.
Complementary studies: 7 x 12 credit point units = 84 cp
Select a second major, minor and or elective units.
QUT You units: 4 x 6 credit point units = 24 cp
2024 and prior commencing students
The Bachelor of Justice is made up of three parts:
- Core Units - 96 credit points (8 x 12 credit point core units)
- Study Area A (Major) - 96 credit points (8 x 12 credit point units). Choose between Criminology & Policing OR Policy & Governance
- Complementary Studies - 96 credit points (8 x 12 credit point units).
Complimentary Studies can be made up of the following combinations:
- Study Area B (second major) - 72 credit points and 24 credit points of any Justice option units or university wide option units
- Combination of one minor (48 credit points) and 48 credit points of any Justice option unit or university wide option units
- 2 university wide minors (48 credit points each)
