Course Structures

To graduate with a Master of Data Science students are required to complete 192 credit points of course units consisting of:

108 credit points of core units (72 credit points of core units and 36 credit points of Capstone units)
84 credit points of Specialisation units consisting of:
- Up to 60 credit points of Specialisation Units, and
- At least 24 credit points of Advanced Specialisation Units

Computational Data Science
Information Systems Analytics
Statistical Data Science

Enrolment Information

Without majors, the course is designed to provide students the opportunity to obtain a cross disciplinary education with specialisations. The units are grouped in these specialisation areas to help guide your unit selection based on your needs and interests. You may choose units from more than one specialisation if you wish. The Specialisation units and Advanced Specialisation units do not necessarily need to be selected within the same specialisation. Unit choice will be contingent on the unit prerequisites.

Further Study - Second Master Degree

Graduates of the IN31 Master of Data Science are not eligible to enrol in the IN20 Master of Information Technology (Data Science major) due to the significant overlap in course content.

However, graduates of the IN20 Master of Information Technology (Data Science major) may be eligible to enrol in the IN31 Master of Data Science.

The IN31 course offers a broader range of units and specialist study areas, including:

Biomedical Data Science
Computational Data Science
Information Systems Analytics
Statistical Data Science.

Students considering a second Master's degree should be aware that, while previously completed QUT postgraduate units may be eligible for credit towards the second degree, those units may not necessarily meet all course requirements. Depending on their prior studies and the requirements of the new course, students may need to complete specified units, including a capstone unit aligned with their chosen study area, to demonstrate achievement of the course learning outcomes and satisfy course completion requirements. Students are encouraged to contact Faculty Student Support to discuss their individual circumstances before applying or enrolling.
